So how do you breath whenever you're doing a significant amount of exercise?

Personally, i always try to breath in through my nose and then out my mouth...it seems to work the best and it allows me to maintain a steady input and output of oxygen/co2.

You shoulda made a choice of 'I don't even know'. I think I breathe through both...mostly the mouth...mainly because my sinuses are so bad...the air just naturally picks the quickest way to the lungs.

yeah, you need an "all of the above" :p I breathe in through my mouth and nose, and out through my mouth.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but in mammals (including us), isn't there a bit of bones in the nose for water vapor in air being breathed out to condense on and then be brought back in to the body? If so, wouldn't it make sense to breathe out thru the nose as much as possible, as to keep hydrated.

Besides, I'm sure an open mouth is nowhere near as aerodynamic as the nose...:D

It depends on how hard I am climbing. Sometimes barely.

Easier to keep from swallowing bugs when your mouth is closed.

My football coach always stressed proper breathing technique (according to him anyways). He told us that we needed to inhale through our nose on the relaxation and exhale through the mouth during exertion.

Don't know if this is proper, just what I've always done!

Varies by how hard I'm working.
easy pace nose in, mouth out.
Honking up a big hill? Mouth in, nose out.
Scubadiving, mouth in, mouth out.

Like somebody else has said, I always thought that proper breathing technique would be through the nose and out the mouth

During heavy exercsion(sp) I don't know what I breath in with, but I do definitally breath out thru my mouth. I am an asthmatic and I have to force the air back out or I will choke down.

One thing they do not tell you about asthma is that when the tubes tighten up you can't breath OUT either and you sorta drown in co2...

When I'm breathing, I make sure to emopty my lungs as completly as I can. Then when you go to inhale, your lungs automatically fill themselves with SOME air and then you have to take over and keep filling them. Deep breathing is better than shallow breathing. Deap breathing allows you to use all of those spongey oxygen absorbing things in your lungs and its more effiecient. At first you will see no apparent difference in you ride, but after 5-10 mins of this breathing you will defidently notice an improvement in your ride.

I've heard that it is very important to make sure you expel as much air as possible to get rid of the C02 that is builiding up in your system. The C02 is a major cause of lactate buildup and therefore important to get rid of so breath out hard! It will also make room for all that important O2 which you want to intake.

This may be slightly off topic. May I ask what chain lube you use while engaging in the above? :D
