I just purchased a Novara Randonee thinking that this was a cyclocross bike, and then someone told me that I made a mistake and purchased a touring bike. After some thinking, I am wondering if this bike can serve as a dual purpose bike for both touring and cyclocross? Does anyone have an opinion on this bike? I dont know anything about it, and I am just starting to take up cycling as a rehab program after having ACL surgery. Any help would be apreciated

it seems cyclo-cross bikes have higher BB for clearance of rocks and other off-road junk
road/tour bikes have lower bB's. Lower center of gravity? more stable?
If asked, the Cyclo-cross bike may make a good touring bike, better than a touring bike would make XCross bike

The difference would be that unless you race cyclocross, there is minimal difference to every day joe between a cyclocross rig and a touring rig. Technically the differences are:
Cyclocross: double chainrings, shorter chainstays, geometry more intended for speed, less braze ons, tires with tread.
Touring. Three chainrings, longer chainstays for more room between your rear panniers and heals, more relaxed and in theory more comfortable geometry, braze on for a front rack, rear rack, at least three water bottles, tires with a smooth tread.
If your bike has three chainrings and a fork that can mount a front rack then you probably have a touring bike, which is what I beleive a Randonee is. Unless you intend to race cyclocross seriously... it may be your perfect bike.
Unless you race cyclocross seriously or go on loaded tours, then the major difference is gearing, and unless you live in hilly areas, your everyday joe rider will be able to use either one.

I've been shopping for a touring bike and if I'm not mistaken, Novara is a REI brand. REI has a blanket policy of full returns for any reason at any time. The bike manager at my local REI even said If I didn't like it after my tour I could still return it.
"Our 100% guarantee ensures that every item you purchase at REI meets your high standards or you can return it for a replacement or refund. You can return your REI purchases at any REI store or by mail."
Just keep that in mind if you decide you want to get a cyclocross frame.

I was angling for a Novara randonee until I fell into a deal for a Jamis Aurora
