View Full Version : Bikes allowed use of full lane
Check out this pic of road sign in San Fransisco, with the TransAmerica Pyramid in background. Look at the rest of the pics that were taken at July's Critical Mass.

I was in that throng of bikes somewhere.
Anyone know how to insert a jpg?

OK, this is to remind the drivers that VC is alive, well, and legal.
here it is.
Great, care to enlighten me on how you did that. I'm hip to the "insert Image" tag, but for some reason I can't paste the image.
Isn't that a great photo, anyway, with the new and old architecture side by side?
I tried pasting/inserting the image just like you did, but that didn't work in this case. Instead, I copied the photo to my own computer ('save picture as'); in advanced mode there is a 'manage attachments' section below the text box, that feature allows you to browse and upload the picture from your own computer and viola, you get the 'thumbnail' image.

Check out this pic of road sign in San Francisco, --- OK here is the actual text of the California Vehicle Code cited on that sign:
Operation on Roadway
21202. (a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:
(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
(3) When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge, subject to the provisions of Section 21656. For purposes of this section, a "substandard width lane" is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.
(4) When approaching a place where a right turn is authorized.
(b) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway of a highway, which highway carries traffic in one direction only and has two or more marked traffic lanes, may ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of that roadway as practicable.
I see the law does not entitle a bicycle full use of the lane without certain exceptions. The pertinent exception here is under (3): "For purposes of this section, a "substandard width lane" is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane."

-- But wait there's more. This is what the code refers to in the part that says:
"...subject to the provisions of Section 21656"
Turning Out of Slow-Moving Vehicles
21656. On a two-lane highway where passing is unsafe because of traffic in the opposite direction or other conditions, a slow-moving vehicle, including a passenger vehicle, behind which five or more vehicles are formed in line, shall turn off the roadway at the nearest place designated as a turnout by signs erected by the authority having jurisdiction over the highway, or wherever sufficient area for a safe turnout exists, in order to permit the vehicles following it to proceed. As used in this section a slow-moving vehicle is one which is proceeding at a rate of speed less than the normal flow of traffic at the particular time and place.

Safety First!!
Every state that I have lived in has had provisions for the substandard width lane and for debris in the road. Cyclists need to utilize this law more. There are too many times that I have gotten flats from street cleaners brushing the debris from the road into the bike lane. I will ride in the middle of the lane (and call the city when I get to work) everyday to prevent flats/wrecks even if it delays a car (if they're mad I will calmly explain to them the law and how I don't want to get injured by riding through glass, gravel and metal and I give them the phone number of the guy in charge of pot holes etc for the city (which I keep in my bag)). I wish Tucson had that sign, it makes me so happy.

I think I'm going to cry...
This pertains to two-lane highways such as Hwy 88 over the Sierra or Hwy 1 along the coast where you might travel for miles behind a slow moving camper or truck. On a city street such as Columbus Av. in SF which is 4 lane with parking and a speed limit of 25mph this would not apply. Bikes can keep up with traffic if not go faster. Just because the cyclist leaves 50 feet between him and the car in front does not oblige him to make way for the car in back. The fact that makes the lane substandard width is the door zone takes up half the right lane. Also the right lane may have double parked cars.

That would be any lane less than 14 feet wide. :)
The SF Bicycle Coalition recently made sweatshirts with this sign printed on the back. I desperately wanted one, but I still can't find out how to get one (I'll join the coalition if I have to!).

Going to the T-Mobile next month? I think they sold them last year.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZT. Not actually correct. Too many big trucks running around in the city (14 feet might not be enough).

You mean the SF Grand Prix? I'm definitely going. I'll look around for the sweatshirts; I suppose they set up a fundraising booth there?

Don't need to do that if the image was already online.

Thanks, scarry, but I'm not a total idiot. ;)
They don't offer the sweatshirt in their online store or otherwise mention it on their site, though.

Right, I looked for it, and couldn't find it either. I got one with my membership, I don't know if they are still offering that or not.

So what is the legal standard by which this is judged in CA? :)
Check out this pic ...http://community.webshots.com/photo/410242690/416688004rHekcO ... Anyone know how to insert a jpg?In the "Reply to Thread" block, there is a small image insert button that you use to insert a link to an image. The icon looks like a mountain with the sun over it (just to the left of the earth/link icon). Click this and at the prompt, insert the location (URL) of the image. The URL has to be the link to the image and not a link to the page with the image in it. The URL you inserted in your original post was to the page that the image can be seen at so it wouldn't work to display an image.
You can also manually insert the image. If you paste the image's url and then preview, the url tags "[ url ] url to image [ /url ]" (spaces added so that you can actually see the tags in the post) will automatically enclose the image url and it end's up looking like this:
http://image52.webshots.com/52/8/80/4/416688004rHekcO_ph.jpg
If you go back to the edit block and change the "url" tags to "img" (ie [ img ] url to image [ /img ]) (without the spaces), it looks like this (more text below):
http://image52.webshots.com/52/8/80/4/416688004rHekcO_ph.jpg
If the URL between the img tags is not a valid image file, you get a broken image icon: http://image52.webshots.com/52/8/80/4/416688004rHekcO. I used your original link to the PAGE where the image was displayed and as you can see, it doesn't work.
Plus in doing this (instead of "managing attachments") you can preview the images using the Preview Post button. I might be wrong about this but I don't believe you can preview attachments.
One final thing about images. As a courtesy to other users, please don't link to large (measured in bytes) images. If you link to a 2MB image, the users may not like having to download the image. The image of the road sign is about 50Kb and with my screen resolution of 1024x768, it is plenty big enough to see. Keep the bytes small please. There may be some that object to any images at all.
Also, there may be rules at bikeforums or the other site about "linking" to images at another site and displaying them at bikeforums. It might possibly be against the rules. Just a thought.
Just my 2 cents worth. Hope this helps.
