I figure I'm probably just unlucky. I'm just running the one combination of chain length, gearing and track-end length to have problems...
Went by the LBS at work to pick up a Surly chain pull today. I've been having trouble with my axle moving back just enough when I put the last turn on that it makes the chain too tight. I should have the solution in my hands, that's what I'm thinking as I head back to work.
Waiting for third shift to arrive so I could get out of there (we're slow and vacation starts tomorrow night - you know I'm working hard :p ) I threw it on. Seems simple enough, but I notice that with the axle in the furthest hole, the thumbscrew is all the way undone, and it's still a little too tight!!!
No problem, I move to the closer hole, and thread the thumbscrew all the way in. Yup, all the way in. Just.... a little....
Too tight.
I'm sure that if the axle was starting just a couple of mm in either direction, there would be no problem. I'm going to switch over to the 14t side tomorrow, and it should be good. Adding another two links of chain actually leaves the 14t way too close to the back of the dropouts, so that's not a solution. A 1/8" halflink would probably work, or one of the Wipperman chains that are nothing but halflinks. Changing my front chainring could work too, but I want to hold off on that until I get a new set of cranks (leads on affordable, really stiff JSO taper all black 165s are appreciated :D ) I think even a mm or two longer or shorter screw or a slight difference in the spacing of the holes would work...
No real reason for this post, just needed to vent.... Should have just spent about the same amount for the NJS tugs on ebay and waited, but no, I needed to fix the problem tonight...
