General Cycling Discussion - I made $200 off a bike snob.

So im out with my bud today on my bike and we run into one of his friends. He has to be a rich bike snob who claims he knows how to ride a bike.. So hes on his US$2500 road bike and takes a look at my bike and claims what a piece of garbage it is compared to his. I have a Concorde Prelude (SL steel) with slightly older Shimano 600 parts on it. Hes got a bike with all Campy Record 10 TI on it. I forgot what make as I didnt actually care. Anyways, back to the story.. So I go, I bet I could beat you in a race with my POS bike. And he goes sure, I beat all my friends in a race. So i go, would you like to put $200 bux on that. And he goes sure, your loss. My friend tellms me quietly, dont worry, you'll beat him.. Hes a wimp. So i go ok, Ill race him. We had a 1km road set up. 2 guys at each end with walkie talkies so they would know when to say go and make sure we didnt cheat or anything. Basically, I sprinted the whole 1km and beat him by about 18 seconds. According to my friend, he stopped springting after 200m and just rode. That was by far the easiest $200 i made. Shoulda seen the look on his face. Damn bike snobs. Think there bike is what wins the race.

I wouldn't call him a bike snob ... I might call him a dumb-ass though. :D

He doesnt ride his bike.. Thats why hes a bike snob.. He just buys the best brands to show it off. BTW, it was a Pinarello.

I've kicked the crap out of a few roadies on my SS cyclocross bike, but to make $200 bucks - awsome. I hope you won gracefully. Did he give an excuse - i.e. "I forgot I had the thick lube on my chain" or "my brakes were dragging", maybe even "I knew I should'nt have skipped a day shaving my legs - I was all out of areo".

"He didnt sleep well the night before" is what he said. He is either a bad sprinter and he was lying or he was tired.. All i know is i sprinted 1 km and he was dead at 200m.

People like him can buy anything they want, but they can't buy class.

1. hes good friends with my friend (im best friends with the guy)
2. my friend is 6'3, 200lbs all muscle (he is scared of him)
3. we both gave my friend $200 before the race started
4. I woulda traced the little kid and kicked him hard if he didnt pay up.

Maybe you can sucker him into another race, but $500 this time.

Be sure to ask him in front of other people so he can't refuse. ;)

i was on my way to the bank to deposit some money i got from work.. i get paid cash. but my friend came to the shop so we rode to the bank together.. instead of depositing 200 tho i deposited 400.

I only normally carry that kinda cash with me when

1. I am going to deposit it in the bank
2. I am going to a computer store or a bike shop and plan on not paying tax.

that is a great story - to challenge someone for cash without knowing his riding skill. there are so many posers out there ---> but i don't discourage anyone from getting the most comfort they can afford. it's not like you have to pass a test before they'll let you ride a certain $$ bike. i just see it as the more units of nicer bikes they sell, the faster the prices come down.

of course, if they guy has attitude......then it is fair game. i've always had humility though.

Well I knew it was a safe bet cuz my friend wispered to me in my ear that he is a wimp and he cant ride whatsoever and all he does is show off his bike. Plus, my buddy is stinkin rich and said if you somehow manage to lose, he would reimburse the money, so in the end, I had nothing to lose except my dignity and knowing that I lost.

As for what Im gonna buy, I need some pedals. My SPDs arent cutting it anymore. I get 40% off on all Look products so I will probably pick up a pair of the PP350 series. Ill then use the original $200 for a pair of shoes.

i guess the only thing worse than a poser is a poser who thinks he's not!
