Folding Bikes - Folder brought INSIDE Cabin of Airplane

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is the first time I've ever seen this but have heard that others have done it. A Brompton owner actually had the courage to bring the bicycle inside the cabin of the plane and put in the overhead compartment. I could not believe it but he actually got away with it! Here's an example of where a 16 inch wheel folder can do something that a 20' inch folder cannot do. I also think the Dahon Presto Lite would be able to accomplish the same feat but you would have to remove the seat post and saddle for the package to become small enough to fit into that tight space.

I don't know if I could ever take the chance because if the crew decides to turn you around, you will almost certainly miss the flight. I think he took a big chance but it worked.

Jim Langley mentions his experience as one of a group of four who put their Bromtpons overhead a few years ago: http://www.jimlangley.net/ride/brompton.html

Those newer Bike Fridays are guaranteed to fit above any overhead bin or even in the bins above your bus seat. I'm going to seriously consider getting one.

Nowadays, the airlines will let people bring just about anything in the cabin. I was shocked during my flight on Monday to see all these boneheads with full suitcases trying to stuff them in the bins when they could barely lift them over their heads. Fools.

What new Bike Fridays will be able to fit above any overhead bin? The Friday has always been a large fold but it looks thin. I could be wrong but wouldn't it get messy with the chain inside the bin?

Gerard Vroomen of Cervelo delivered the Carbon Soloist over to the CSC team during the Giro this year and wrote that he had the frame in a carry-on hanging suit bag that he was able to hang up in the little closet compartment on the plane. Sure, it wasn't a whole bike, but imagine trusting a frame like that to check-in luggage!!

I believe they sent me an email about this new bike- it's supposed to have smaller wheels, and they boasted it would fit into any overhead compartment. Some dood in England was testifyin' about them fitting in the bus overhead bin. I'll keep my eyes open and drop you a PM when they've sent more info about it.
