Hi BeeTL! I'm peregrine and I'm Aquarius, not sure what kind of problem that presents me with but there sure have to be some :p
Excuse me for being late, Jschen, but did you notify CalTrans? A neighbor of mine ran into a sign that blew into the lane and did some pretty good damage. She called them and they took care of it. And it wasn't because the sign belonged to them. An employee of mine had their car splattered with a fine mist of white paint (from who knows where) while driving on the freeway and for some reason they covered that, too. They are (from what I was told) responsible for driving hazards and must keep the roads clear and safe.
Didn't know about that. I'll have to look into it. I don't know what kinds of proof one would have to provide, so I'm not sure I could convince them, but it's definitely worth a look. Thanks for the tip. :) I also need to see what the insurance company says.

Also, while at work they stick you with the people that are all attitude and emotional problems because you can handle it without much of a fuss.

Were you able to somehow take pictures of the item or the damage? I think you call up or get on line to CalTrans and ask or inquire about fililng a claim. Be sure to have all of your details in order. Ask the insurance company about it. I'm sure they would rather have CalTrans pay than them. And it won't go as a claim against you if CalTrans handles it. Good luck.

lol, WOW, that does sound a lot like me, although I hadn't put it together like that before

No pictures of item, and it was gone later. Didn't think it was a big deal at the time. The damage, well, it's easy enough to get pictures of that.
My parents' advice is to see what the insurance company says. Obviously, if they believe I have a case with CalTrans, it's in their and my interest to steer my case that way. We'll see. In any case, though, we're in agreement that we'll be replacing the car.
My parents also want me to buy a nicer car, with them paying for it. I know they just want to feel like they're properly providing for me, but I also know that the expense involved really isn't worth it. We had the same discussion when they generously bought me any car I wanted after college. Mind you, after footing my entire college costs ($$$$$). From what my sisters told me, my dad was furious that I decided against asking for a BMW 330i (a car he knew I really liked) and asked for a Ford Focus instead. (Basically, what I would have bought on my own anyway, though I splurged on a few options since they were paying.) My parents double checked several times to make sure I really wanted the Ford Focus and not the BMW.
I know I'm incredibly fortunate, but I have reservation about buying a car of the likes of a BMW 330i while in grad school. Yes, my sisters got their nice cars. But it just doesn't feel right to me to do the same. Plus, I'm far wealthier than my parents ever were at my age. (My two year stint in industry and my consulting work have been kind to me.) It's nice of my parents to help provide a car, but if I really want something that expensive, I feel like I should be buying it myself. I know their parents worked very hard to provide for them, but that's because it took long nights of doing tasks like copying manuscripts for $1/night to provide for basic expenses like housing, tuition, clothing, and food. And a few hard nights so that my dad could afford, for example, tennis balls. Not a BMW. Heck, 25 years ago, as chief surgeon in a major hospital in Taipei, my dad drove a Civic.
I dunno... long, strange day with too many things coming up that I wasn't prepared for. I'll take some time to think about how to deal with it all.

Wow Jschen, you've got soooome integrity. You're a good son. I feel the same way that you do. My mom offered me the down payment to my house as well as my siblings. I was the only one that refused it. She said that it was an advance on our inheritence. I told her that I had to prove it to myself that I could do it by myself. If I need it, I'll let her know. Needless to say, I feel good about being able to do it.

Yo KT!
You might have read elsewhere that I got out on Sunday after all. My ride started about 11:00 from Tarpon. I did my standard 42 straight through - 3hours @ 14MPH. I'm really enjoying that ride and that distance, and I'll credit you for the inspiration.
After reading some of the racing threads, I'm thinking I'd like to try that. I'm going to try to hook up with the gearlink group this Saturday.
I'll let you know how that goes, but I'm pretty sure I'll be dropped like a hot potato!!!
Oh well, you have to start somewhere...
:)
Lex - Go to the grocery store and get yourself some of that Chystallized Ginger. It's a lot cheaper in the bulk aisle or in the produce dept. Take a size that is about a 50 cent piece and boil it down in a sauce pan, enough to make a couple of cups of tea. Sip that slowly. You should feel better. Give some to the kids before they get sick. It should help with the nausea and stomach cramps. If you don't have access to make tea (for example at work or in the car) consume a piece the same size and SLOWLY sip room temp water. Not too much water, just a little to get the hotness of the ginger cleansed from your mouth.
This is an old Chinese secret that has never failed. And I'm not even that Chinesey!
Try that out and let me know. Hope you feel better.
I stopped at the grocery store on the way home from work yesterday and did not see chystallized ginger. I did find some ginger tea so bought that. As it happens, husband came home from work last night sick with whatever I had. I made husband some tea but the smell caused a mad rush for the bathroom. He says that if, in the time it takes to feel better, that hell has frozen over he'll try to drink some. I did feed some to kid (who didn't like it but is good when mommy said that it was medicine) and sent some with grandma so hopefully it'll work out. I'll let you know if kid winds up getting sick or not.
Thanks,
Lex

Eating the last of my ice cream and contemplating a single speed conversion of my mtb cuz the RD is ****in' up.
Taking a dinner break and continuing to ponder my upcoming car purchase. I have 9 days to come up with a sensible decision. And only one non-workday during that period (this Sunday) to go test drive. Then on March 4-5, I plan to be at my parents' place car shopping with the intent to make a purchase.
Now eating a raspberry-flavored frozen fruit bar.
Done with dinner, but not done with my dinner break.

What are you considering? Ferrari? Hyundai? Ariel Atom?

Went into a rock on a steep part that my bike couldn't handle. Did a flip, and something dug into my leg really hard. I just laid there for awhile.

http://www.arielmotor.co.uk/04/profile/sideon2.jpg
The Ariel Atom 2 recently replaced the Lotus Elise as the totally impractical but extremely high performance car that I hope to someday own. :D In fact, my computer's wallpaper is a picture of the Atom 2. But have to get other things in order first, like graduating from school, landing a decent job, and buying a house. No useless toys until other things are in order.
I'd love a Ferrari someday. In 2001, I did some calculations for what it would take to for me to be comfortable with buying one. I figured I need a minimum of $5 million in investment assets. (Adjusting for inflation to 2001 dollars.) $3 million minimum to ensure future retirement income that's consistent with a lifestyle that includes Ferrari ownership. $1 million to generate sufficient passive income to occasionally buy a supercar. $1 million to generate some more income to be able to afford to drive the thing as Enzo intended. Then in 2003, I adjusted the minimum to $7 million. After all, assuming I'm married someday, if I buy a Ferrari and my wife happens to say "Isn't that Lamborghini cute? Can we get one of those?", well, I can't exactly say no. If she wants a new kitchen or something like that, it's no big deal, but if she picks something comparably expensive (both up front and in long term costs), well, another $2 million must be around to generate enough income to cover it. $7 million is a lot of money, and given that chemists don't exactly make a huge amount (especially if I decide to become a professor), it would appear that I won't be getting a Ferrari unless I marry someone very wealthy. ;)
I'm considering various sporty sedans in roughly the $20K ballpark.

Just finished messing w/ my RD for the 3rd time tonight. This time I did it right. I hung a couple ropes and straps from my kitchen cabinet and pot rack and tied them around the seatpost to elevate the rear wheel, ghetto style. Then I messed w/ the limit screws and cable adjuster while spinning the cranks. Nothing. Nada. Gatz. Still making noise and fussing w/ the gear changes. I also noticed the top jockey wheel barely comes into contact w/ the chain on the last 3 highest gears. It's going to the LBS tomorrow for a repair estimate while I price upgrades online and pray that I get my new bike soon.
jyo, sorry to hear that. That sucks. :(

S'ok jsc, I look at it as the opportunity I was looking for to finally do something totally cool w/ my bike. How's this sound: Strip off everything, get the frame powdercoated black, replace the BB, get a ENO Eccentric SS/FG hub built to a nice wheel, new cranks and chainring and voila! ss/fg mtb that'd be easier to maintain than what I have now.
Sounds cool as long as you have no moster hills in your commute. I hope to try a fixie someday... and with the climb on the way to work now doable in a 42/21 gear (full effort out of saddle climbing), it's becoming a more realistic possibility. Maybe in a year or so, I'll give it a shot. Today was the first time I made it up seated without dropping into my granny ring (lowest non-granny gear of 42/25) and maintaining a reasonable climbing cadence. :)

I've put 97,000 miles on my 2002 Nissan Altima. You can get a 2.5s with leather for about $20k new. It's sporty, practical, and reliable. I'll be buying another one soon.
And, by the way, I'm going to bed.
Good night!

No major hills on my commute, but I'd like to have a geared bike b/c I do rides with climbs. The new bike I ordered and am waiting on is a ss/fg cyclocross so my mtb will probably stay geared for now. Especially since I just found the ENO Eccentric hub is $160 and it's not even laced to a wheel! By the time I add up all the parts (new wheel built around the hub, cranks, chain ring, BB, chain), I can just pick up a used Surly 1x1 or IRO Mia instead for a few bucks more.

I find out that my bike only has 30mm of travel lol. Thats why when I go directly into a rock it doesn't really deflect anything. Yea we should ride, I'd love to have someone to ride with. My ride buddy has so much work to do in all his ap classes Im often riding alone. Yes, I didn't put anything on it right away, I just let the lower wound bleed for awhile :) I would've just left it as is, but my mother told me I could get blood poisoning. Yes we'll go nice :)

Okay. When the weather gets nicer. Then we'll do the PM thing with everyone.
Waiting around for the last reaction of the day to be complete. (Hopefully within an hour.) Then about 15 minutes of work to do, and then I'll call it quits for the day.
I second Siu's suggestion of dilute hydrogen peroxide if you haven't done anything to disinfect that wound yet. Alternatively, iodine swabs should do the trick.

*sigh* $300 for a ss/fg conversion or $320-$450 for a used ss/fg mtb. Think I'll just get the LBS to fix the derailleur and save up for a new 8 spd folder. That way I'll have a light geared bike and then I can Frankenstein my mtb.
