I've used my bag for a week of courier work and it's starting to have an all encompasing odour. would it be safe to throw it in the washing machine? There's no way I can have this smell with me all day tomorrow. I was pretty much bearable most of today but soon as I got home I felt like there was somone behind with a serious b.o. problem. I kept turning around but found no one but me. It's a chrome. Anyone have any problems washing them in the machine? How about drying?

there have been a bunch of threads about this, but if you don't want to search for them i think the best suggestion was to soak it in vinegar and hot water.

washing machine and regular soap don't do much iirc.

OMG, funny google ad.

yeah, vinegar worked for my rank HRM strap that couldn't get clean no matter how many times it was in the wash.

I did a search but the only thread that came up was Chrome vs. Bailey. Second one brought up a good one. Must go get some vinegar now. Damned vaginal odour.

peripatetic was a strong advocate of vinegar as well, in the thread i started. haven't seen him around since his "screw nyc bikeshops" ranting. oh well. i wonder if he would have had more lessons for us..

Hey, it's good to see the forum moving back to normal after the Don Walker dust up. A thread about bag stench is what was really needed. If we could get a followup thread on shoes or, be still my beating heart, chain lube, I'd say we'd be well on the road to recovery.

With that screen name, it was only a matter of time before he hit the road. Right?

to clean bags in the backyard
I've used a bucket with dish soap (not too much) and warm water,
get a mop handle and thrash it around in the water with the bag
rinse with the hose ...

now for that hygene problem...you can't exactly do the same thing

Sounds pretty much like what I do ... just make sure the mop handle doesn't have any splinters on it...

I should really try this vinegar thing. At the end of the day, my bag smells worse than I do, and that's an achievement.
