Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi. I am new to bike commuting; I just got a used Raleigh SC 30 (2003). I have been reading the forums, and I know this is a heavier bike, etc., but my commute is short (less than 4 mi. round trip) and the roads here are awful (under construction for the past 6 months). I know I will have several questions. The first is: What's the deal with brakes? The specs on the SC 30 say it comes with Linear Spring Brakes. What does this mean? What kind are they? I am confused! :o
Thanks

Linear-pull brakes are also known as direct-pull brakes or v-brakes. They're pretty much the standard on mountain/comfort/hybrid bikes these days.
See explanation here:
