I've cruised a number of threads so far here and I've seen a bunch of folks post that they wouldn't get clipless pedals for winter riding. Now, aside from the cold toes that you get since they don't make BOOTS for winter riding that can take the cleat what're the reasons for not liking the clipless?

how many prefer just a plain platform? how 'bout step-ins?






note: I've got eggbeaters on both my rides (for efficiency's sake) and rode all last winter on eggbeaters and had a great time! :D

I would love to ride all winter with clipless pedals. I have a set Lake winter riding shoes, but I find them not warm enough in sub zero temps. Even with shoe covers.

1. I don't like simple platform pedals, because slipping off the front of them is easy(do to snow and ice build up).

2. I like a platform with just a toe clip/no straps in the way during in a quick fall.

3. It all depends on the riders preference of what he or she likes.

I ride clipless all year long in all kinds of weather. There are cold weather boots that take a cleat... though they are expensive. I don't remember who makes them, I just remember seeing the price tag and thinking, "Hm... not so much."

I asked my old mother to knit me some giant wool socks to fit over my shoes with a hole underneath for the cleat to engage the pedal. In wet condition I have big shoecovers over the socks. I sweat profusely when training so there is a timelimit of one and a half hour before my feet are so wet that I freeze anyway. I bring along an extra pair of inner socks and change during my rides.

dude, yer mom is soooo cool! Hmm.... woolen socks for riding... gotta hand it to ya, that's a great idea.

And those boots from Lake? Yeah, all I want to know is how cold a weather are they rated for?
