Commuting - Specialized Sirrus, extremely sweet

I got a Specialized Sirrus (base model) for $499 recently, moved all of my racks, bottles, lights over to it, and it is a sweet ride. Quick, yet very comfy.

I was concerned about 100 psi 28 mm tires, I had been running 80 psi 26 x 1.5 inch Nimbus Armadillos on my old mountain bike, and thought I maybe couldn't go narrower given Houston's awful roads and bike lanes, but the frame, fork and suspension seatpost make the Sirrus more comfy than the old fat tired bike.

I upgraded it to 28 mm All-Condition Armadillos. Again, I was wondering about traction in the city with essentially a tread-less tire, but it's been fine. And the slick tire doesn't pick up quite as much glass and junk as the small little Nimbus Armadillo treads.

I have this one too. I run at 120psi on mine. Great bike :D

I'm pretty satisfied with mine for a commuter,but my route is fairly smooth. I'll never ride it around the city for CM again,it really beat me up. I'm also working on seating issues. The stock seat hurt my butt on rides over 10mi,so I switched to a Bontrager like the one I put on my Kona(sorry,don't remember the model). This just switched the pain to a more 'tender' area,so I put the stocker back on and I'm playing with the adjustments.

Other than a slightly rough ride,and seating issue,it is a nice bike. Light,fast,good brakes. I'm also really impressed with the stock Flak Jackets. I've hit glass twice where I've actually heard it go 'pop!',but there's not a mark on either tread.

I rode one and went with a Giant OCR2 (I knew I was going to want to go fast, not to race, but for the hell of going fast) but the Sirrus and the FCR4 were both like fresh breezes to ride. Really cool bikes.
When my wife gets tired of her Huffy, I'm going to put her on a Sirrus and see what she thinks.

Yep I love my Sirrus too. I go everywhere on it. I agree the seat isnt very comfy over 10 miles and I would like some bar ends also.

what is that bright yellow ball on the fork? (and why is your black color is flat? mine's shiny)

Thats a reflective sticker I put on each side of the fork. Mines a 05 basic model. I didnt see any glossy black at the bike shop when I got it. I like flat black better anyway.

I have an older Specialized Sirrus (from 2001), and I ran my tires between 120- 130 psi. Those were great tires... or rather, are great tires. I still use it for my beater bike in the wintertime.

I just found a deal on an '04 Sirrus Sport for just over $500. I like it alot, it's such a slick-clean bike!

It should go for way cheaper than that. A bike that's nearly 2 years old should be in the 300- 400 range. That's about the price for a new Sirrus!

Have you tried any other seats?

Well here's mine, everything is pretty much whatever it came with. I did add a generic Schwinn computer and light, Planetbike Super Spot light, Cateye LD1000, and Specialized saddle bag. The 'Specialized' strip and the zipper outside liners are reflective. I keep a spare tube, Wrench Force CO2 Quick Shot with 4 canisters, and couple tire tool.
I sighted the planetbike light for about 10 yards or so while the other one was about 5 yards, not bad at all. I rode 40 miles last Saturday, no problem with discomfort at all!

In general, go Specialized!

It is the sirrus sport model, original retail about $700. I like the silver finish much nicer than the newer dark gray color. I'm happy and I didn't see anything else I liked in that price range.
