For a couple of months, I’ve been working on purchasing a city bike for the short commute from school to apartment and back. Google maps tells me that the commute is only 1 mile one-way. But I would guess that what it lacks in distance it more than makes up for in danger, at least relative to commutes in other places, as well as in overall sensory bombardment. I’m gearing up for getting ‘doored’, shuved out of the way by indifferent city busses, honked at, jarred by our cavernous potholls, and otherwise soiled by ‘the city’, New York. It ranks number one in bike theft and it is odd to me that here the gear that many people use to secure their bike is of a weight not dissimilar to that of their bike itself.

I should say though that I’m more as much or more interested in learning about what it’s like to bike places other than here. I’ve already seen people in the forums from far away places like Montana, Northern Spain, and Wisconsin.

These forums have been one of many resources for me and I continue to read through them for everything from tips on commuting, images of commuter rigs and advice on what’s worth it and what isn’t. I should say that the volume of information can be at once exciting and encouraging, but also intimidating or challenging for me. As a person who longs for comprehensive knowledge of subjects, particularly when they’re new, I have to take breaks from reading up. In any case, it’s cool to be part of the forum and I look forward to avoiding work by reading more and more and from talking with you.
