I'm really beginning to feel that I'm just plain unfit and my irregular attitude towards cycling hasn't helped. Anyhow I've read that using a monitor is really the best way to train and improve fitness by riding to the correct hear rate?

Is this the most sensible way of improving the overall fitness and strength?

I use a Polar Heart Rate monitor for running, spinning, cycling - all of my aerobic workouts - have been using one for six years. It's the best thing I have discovered. It has taught me more about my body and how it responds to workouts than anything else. Also, it has helped me know the difference between when my workout is a physical struggle and when it is more of a mental struggle. Before I started using one, I used to feel fatigue after my morning workouts and in need of a nap in the afternoons. After I started using one, I learned I was actually going too far and too fast. Now, I am energized by the workouts.

Also, it's been fun to watch my resting heart rate go down each year. Absolutely the best toy out there. I would recommend getting one that lets you set the high and low range, so a beeper goes off when you are out of range.
