Classic & Vintage - Peugeot ID

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was just talking about getting an orange bike and found this on my way home today. Would like to know if anyone can tell me the model, year, and all that great stuff. Took all the parts off for cleaning and whatnot and hope to touchup the frame at least before I use her to take me to school and back. I'm so excited about this one!

Cool bike. Way cool Bike Bondage and torture device. I need one of these for when my bikes are naughty. The Peugeot guys will chime in shortly, ignore my ravings.

It looks like mine, a UO8 (white version)

Hehe. That's my improvised (impoverished?) bike stand. Does a good job of keeping the bikes off the ground to work on.
I don't know if any of this will help, but there are MAPAC "RACER" brakes and levers, Simplex shifters and rear derailleur. There's a Shimano FD, but I don't think it's original. Rigida Chrolux on the front rim with a 73 inside a diamond shape. Normandy on the front hub with Simplex QR skewer. The rear wheel doesn't have the fancy etchings on the brake surface like the front one and is not QR. The rear hub says Joytech on it. CMC27X1/4W0 on the rear rim. AVA stem, Lyotard pedals.

uo8, circa 1973... there should be only one braze on for a shifter mount, due to who knows what thinking on the part of the Peugeot/Simplex engineers. The UO8 isn't particularly valuable, but they make nice fixed gears/urban beaters/general transport bikes, if you are willing to deal with some of the French threading issues (which are overstated anyway, IMLTHO). If your crank was not cottered, it's been replaced. I'd replace the stem; they're known for breakage, although I've never had one go.
I think the stand like a public stock, so the public can throw rotten fruit at bad bikes.

You know I'm digging your fabulous Orange Peugeot!
Welcome to the club!
The genuine article you have there. It's great!
Stick with the vintage feel of it. Maybe a white saddle, white bar tape.
Croched gloves....oh, have fun!
*cough* Nice toe. :D
BTW: coincidentally, I found a Peugeot UO-8 today!
I'm giving it to a friend who's planning on fixing it up and riding it. Don't know if he'll keep the Simplex/Mavac groupo or convert it to a fixie but whatever they do, I'll post pics.
Here's what I've got so far (yeah, it's a basket case)
BTW: LOVE the orange UO-8 you've got there! I'd only seen silver previously.
Harris Cyclery has a bit of info on the UO-8 line and there's other stuff online too. (a search of BikeForums.net turns up a lot)

Wow, thanks a lot for all the info guys!
It's a bit large, but I'm flexible. I'll just put a 90mm stem on it that I have laying around. It's chrome so will look much better than the stem on it now.
af895: That picture of the orange UO8 you posted is mine! Different stem and FD. The rest, including the bartape (not going back on), is the same as the picture.
You know what is really odd? Last year, my mother bought a garage sale bike that had a bent frame. She didn't know when she got it, but at least I was able to take some parts off it. One of the parts was a frame pump that is the same exact one in that picture you posted!
All cleaned up with chrome blingin like fiyah!:

Cables and housing tomorrow if I can find someone with the white housing.
