Cyclocross - Bontrager CX Handlebars

I was planning on putting a set of the Bontrager CX Handlebars on my mountain bike, but was worried about the compatability of brake levers. Since the Handlebars are 25.4, will I have a hard time finding brake levers to fit it, or will I be able to mount some road brakes on it? I know it's not exactly a cyclocross question, but I figured this would be the best place to ask. I appreciate any info, thanks.

i think you are going to have more more problems than just the levers....do you have v-brakes? if so, you are going to have to make sure that the road levers will pull enough cable to create enough stopping power. You can use "travel agents" for that and it should be ok. also, you may have to replace your stem because chances are the drops wont fit in the mtb stem that you have. if your existing brake levers will fit on the drops (on the tops, obviously), then you might be good to go. otherwise you could just get some top-mounting cyclocross levers and use those...but then you wouldnt have road levers so you wouldnt be able to ride in the hoods, or brake from the drops, which sort of defeats the purpose of putting drops on the bike to begin with.

The handlebars are MTB size, which is why I was interested in them. But that presents the problem of the road levers not necessarily fitting. I didn't know about the road levers not pulling enough for the V Brakes though, I'll have to look into that. I have STI shifters now, and I can mount them for the time being, but like you said, it defeats the purpose of the drops somewhat. I'm looking at doing the switch for commuting purposes mainly, but was hoping that somebody here had specific experience with these bars, since they're designed for CX purposes, despite the sizing issues.

The bulge area on a normal road bar is 26.0, but the rest of the bar is 24.0, I think. I would think that the Bontrager bars are the same size in the non-bulge area. Oh, and if you can use them on your frame, you're probably better off with cantis instead of V-brakes+travel agent if you're planning on using road levers.

That's pretty close to what I'd been thinking. Thanks for the info. I've been debating the switch to canti's, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to do that when all is said and done. One thing at a time.
