Triathlon - contacts or glasses

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just got contacts and was woundering how many have done tri's with them. main concern is the swiming,
if any type of goggles are better than the rest for swimming with them or is it easey not to have to mess with them

I've worn contacts for 20 years and the typical swim goggle always felt like it was going to make my lens pop out. Last year I bought one of the Seal masks from Aqua Sphere and I think they are great.

H20Chick will be making fun of me soon because this is yet another example of my love for gear...by the way, I have a clear pair and a tinted pair.

I wear contacts when I swim.
Aquasphere are the best.
I have the Kaiman's. One clear one mirrored for outdoor swimming. No leaks - no contact problems.

Ha ha ha! Here I am! Seal mask? Puh-lease!!! Geek-o-rama CJ! That's akin to the uber-padded Barracudas from the 80s... But seriously, the answer to this question is you go with whatever works for you, and whatever you feel comfortable with.
I've worn contacts for about 12 years. I even play water polo with them (and yes, I open my eyes underwater) and in that time I've only lost 2 or 3 lenses, and that's usually when I got swiped in the eye by a player, or taken a direct splash in the eye. When you put your eyes in the water and blink, it's like they kind of suck on better. That's the first thing I do, actually, is go under and open my eyes and blink.
In any case, I wear the $4 "Swedish" googles. No foam, and they fit right into your eye socket. I've worn those forever and ever, and they never leak. I raced in them (in my younger days) and that's what I wear in the ocean, too. But they're not for everyone - it takes getting used to. But I'm definitely of the philosophy that less is more where goggles are concerned.

You also must have a really good job!

Googles? Hmmm, that must mean I'm spending too much time online and not enough time in the pool!
CJBruin - I hope you know I was just teasing about the Seal mask. I know people love 'em.

No worries...I was pretty much asking for it :)
I don't see a lot of people wearing them at tri's but what the hell, they're comfortable to me.

contacts for sure
1) i've never had a problem
2) try running out of t1 and trying to ride with foggy glasses
3) if your eyes are like mine, you might not be able to see the bouys!
my goggles are basically swedes and I don't have problems

I think I'll need to learn how to use contacts sometime. I currently have some Rudy Projects Ketyums with an Rx insert for the cycling and running, but I can only see shapes and colors on the swim. Maybe I'll just get some of those approximate Rx goggles for the swim - probably a cheaper option.

I surf and swim in contacts daily. I use acuviews and they are nice and thin, my understanding is that they are high water content. I surf with no goggles and swim with Speedo goggles, I tried some of the larger more mask like swim goggles but they dont work/fit my face well. Oh and I scuba dive however- I will sometimes use a rewetting solution just before descent because if you are down for say an hour, you can dry out. Contacts love salt water! Think about it, its saline. Just dont open your eyes too much or they can float out. It took me a while to get use to duck diving with my eyes closed. It is a little sketchy on really big days.

Contacts - try the Ciba Vision Night & Days. I wear them for 45 days straight without taking them out - I sleep in them too. Its like having lasik. They are 98% breathable - they have a patent on their technology so they are unlike any other contacts out there.

You dont wake up with your eyes stuck or missing a lens? Have you ever worn the Acuviews? I would take mine out at night. Thanks!

i ahven't found a swim mask that fits well, but i try to not wear swedish-style or small eye-cup goggles in a race, because i've been told horror tales/urban legends about taking a direct kick in the eye while wearing those. eep!
my goggles now (they're cheap, you can go through/lose a lot of them!) are a larger fit, so i don't worry about taking kicks. too busy elbowing others. sorry, no contacts, so i'm no help, but a mask sounds good.
