Fox news says it's a Cat 5 moving at 11mph...but TRAFFIC exiting is only moving at 5mph with only 3 ways out of N. Orleans... Hopefully they'll get out before she arrives.

PLUS it's heading for the off shore docks for the big inbound oil tankers...Looks like oil prices for commuters are going up!

Monday morning here in NZ, oil just hit 70.80 a barrel on the market open. Looks like bikes will remain well bid, SUV's just looked a little worse.
I'm glad I cycle to work.

Bring on spring - I'm lovin it.
I do hope that all the people in this hurricanes path are ok, it looks nasty. Times like these I think we live in a very lucky country.

When it comes time to evacuate in the face of a hurricane (or, here in the northwest, I guess a volcano would be more likely), I am not sure I'll be going by bike.

Fox news says

I see we're all working on getting just a little bit stupider today.

Watching the Fox "news" channel makes one soft in the head.

Are you saying their reporting of the hurricane was innaccurate, or did you just feel like hijacking the thread?

I just felt like hijacking the thread, or at least partially tangenting it. Faux news always raises my ire a little bit. Sorry.

Fox news is no more biased than any other news channel, it just happens to be biased in a different direction. Calm down and get back on track.

My only concern with evacuating by bike is that the roads would be even more crowded with pissed off drivers than they usually are.

If you are fleeing a hurricane, would you have a nice tailwind? Or would the wind direction be perpindicular to your line of escape? I might enjoy riding with an 80 mph tailwind...

Anyone have any stories about cycling in Hurricane areas? I'll be commuting through the remnants tomorrow morning.

Really, am I glad I sold my car last week. I thought $3 a gallon was bad I can't imagine what they're gonna hit.

If the wind is to your back the eye is sorta to your left. If you are in its path you might want a tailwind for a time to get out of the direct path but you need to get a way from the eye to get to an area with reduced wind speed which means getting the wind to your right. But, when the wind is 80 mph the junk flying through the air is dangerous so you'd best hunker down. When you are further away with lower wind speed it might be happier pedalling. Some books on sailing have strategies for getting away.

Hurricane area? Not, really, but I've ridden through the tail end of 'em before, 40 or 50 mph gusts. It's fun... a bit of a trick, but kind of fun.

Nothing like really being caught in a hurricane, thankfully. My sympathy to those who got slammed this go round.

I was careful to say "area." If you were cycling in the hurricane itself, you'd be in be Gulf of Mexico now.
