Can I use a Shimano XT 750 rear mountain derailleur with Ultegra STI shifters on my road bike? I need a 34 gear in the back for some serious road rides coming up this fall with steep and long grades and climbs, and with some neurological deficiencies in my legs caused by a tumor I need the 34 in the back. My road bike now has Ultegra 9 speed STI shifters - I'd like to just install the XT 750 rear (the older version without the reverse shift) and the XT 11-34 cassette - will these work with the Ultegra STI shifters?

If you don't get any responses here try the mechanics forum. I am going to guess, note I said guess, that you can. It seems to me that all the brifter does is click over and let the proper amount of cable out or in regardless of the derailure.

yes- my bianchi axis (2000) came with STI Road (105) and XT rear deraill. worked with no problem

Absolutely. The rear deraileurs are interchangeable. Fronts are not.

This is a common setup for light touring bikes.

really, why not?

I've used XT (or LX, whatever) front with 105 STI shifters, too....

I think the critical issue is the size of the chainrings, not the shifters.

also- since there are very few top pull road front derailleurs around (at least when i was looking a couple years ago), you generally need to run a mtb front deraill. or rig up a pulley if you have top tube-routed shifter cables.
