I just went to my LBS and ordered a Bianchi Volpe (the 2006 models are out, for your information).

They originally sized me on a 56cm size Trek road bike (don't know which model), and decided it was a bit large, so recommended that I'd probably be good on a 55 for my Bianchi. I am between 5'7" and 5-8", by the way.

After doing some searching online, I found that Bianchi's tend to have a high standover height for their sizes in comparision to other companies. For instance, a 55cm Bianchi has a higher standover than that of a 56cm Trek, at 31.5 compared to Trek's 31.1. The next size down for Bianchi Volpe is the 52cm, which has a standover of 30.5.

Finding this out, I went to tell the guys at the shop about what I had discovered, and they went ahead and called Bianchi and asked about the sizing and whatnot (not sure exactly what was discussed) and it was recommended that I get the 52cm to be on the safe side. So, they ended up ordering me the 52cm.

They told me that with a larger size, I may be screwed for comfort, and would find difficulty bailing out if I needed to get off my bike in a hurry, and whatnot, and they said that the 52cm, if it was too small, they could raise the seat for me, and swap the stem so that they would accomodate my size.

Even with all of this, even though I am the one who suggested this in the beginning anyhow, I am paranoid as hell that I am going to get the wrong size.

Can anyone shed some light for me on this subject?

Was I correct in that Bianchi's tend to be a size larger than other bikes?

I even found a bike on Ebay where someone is selling a Bianchi Axis (52cm, same standover height), who claims to be 5'9", stating that the bike is a 52 but fits more like a 55.

This eased me a bit but as I stated earlier, I am still worried.

Any thoughts on this?

As far as frame sizing is concerned do Treks and Bianchis make their measurements in the same manner?.... center to center, center to top, or center to top of seat collar? Ask your LBS, as two identically sized frames can end up with completely different published measurements depending on how the measurements were taken. I think these guys at your LBS had no business using Trek's measurements to determine the correct Bianchi size.

I'm 6' 1" and ride a Bianchi Eros size 59cm. All other brands I've been fit for put me in the 57-ish range, and I've been told numerous times Bianchis run a little big. I think you'll probably be alright with some minor adjustments to the seat post, stem, etc (which I'm sure you would have altered regardless).

The Volpe's a great bike. Be sure to post pics when it arrives. Congrats! :)

I am your height and have a 52 Volpe. Fits me perfectly.

I'm 6' 1" and ride a Bianchi Eros size 59cm.

I am also 6'1" and I ride a 55cm, the 59 was right on the ragged edge of too big for me. The point being that height is only one factor, people are all built different, like you and I for example. We are the same height but you have longer legs.

Most bike makers publish standover height in the geometry specs, I have no clue why the LBS just didn't measure and consult the specs on Bianchi's site.

The Volpe is one of the best values available for a bicycle. I don't particularly like the STI setup and would look to install bar end shifters with brake levers. It's a great bike.

What color is the 2006 Volpe?

I just rode one of these the other day. I'm 5'11" and I rode the 58. It was WAY too big. I rode a 55 and it was very comfy, though I did feel a bit stretched with the stem size. I prefer a more upright position.

My plan, if I don't find a good deal on a cross bike by near the end of the year I'll probably get a 2005 55cm Volpe, hopefully on end of the year clearance.

Cheers!

I'm 5'8", and the 52cm that I ended up getting fits me "perfectly," as well as I know. This considering that this is my first non-freestyle bmx style bike.

At first it felt my saddle was a bit high, but after I removed the reflector that was on my seatpost and lowered it half an inch, it feels much better.

I'm thinking of getting a volpe too. I'm 6'2" with a 35" inseem. Anyone with similar measurements have a volpe? what size works for you? My proportions, I think are average

I think you're pretty safe. I'm 5-7 and my 52 Volpe is a perfect match. Anything larger would have been very uncomfortable.

I'm 6'3" and ride a 58cm Volpe (2003). I tried the 6cm but it felt too big. The 58cm may be a tad small but I have replaced the seatpost and stem to accommodate me. Just to give you a sense of scale, my other bikes are all mountain bikes and they are 21"-23" bikes.
