Hey all,
Been lurking around the forums a little while I decided what to do with my interest in biking. I just moved to DC and there are so many more bike friendly areas here than in Long Island, NY (for one, the metro is bike friendly). So I went and got lost around DC (half a day, probably 20 miles) looking at monuments on my Schwinn High Plains and now I want to do more ... like a century - maybe middle next season.
But I figure that it would probably kill me to do it on my Schwinn - so I picked up a 2005 Fuji Royale as a road trainer (basically a road bike with a straight bar, as was commented by a few sales people) and the High Plains do duty as the off-roader (I'm really fond of it and it still feels like a betrayal to get a new bike - I don't think I could sell it!). Being used to my mountain bike setup I wasn't ready to start using drop bars ... especially when the last drop bar bike I used had the lever shifters in the middle of the bar '80's style.
I stumbled onto the site while I was searching for a bike to fit my needs. There were alot of great suggestions in the Road Bike / Best Bikes Under $700 catagory and I'm glad it was a sticky. Also the sticky on the FAQ and Answers on the same page was informative too. So I knew a little what to look for ... carbon forks, Shimano 105 drivetrain, 700c tires, etc ... The bike shop convinced me to get clip peddles with platforms so I don't have to clip in every time. I've never used them before the having the option seems like a good idea (the bike originally came with clip only, so I had to switch them to something else). Anyway, this is too long for an intro not many will read! I think I will repost this in the DC area cycling partner's thread too, just to see if anyone wants to go for a ride!
