Classic & Vintage - Where can find new/replacement M14 pedals for my peugeot??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have an old peugeot bicycle and need replacement pedals. Modern pedals do not fit the bike as the existing stronglight cranks suit M14? pedals.(Modern pedal threads are slightly too large.) I would dearly like to fit some SPD pedals to the bike as I already have spd cleats/shoes for my modern mountain bike. Is there anywhere I can buy SPD clipless pedals to fit M14 cranks? OR can I buy replacement clipped pedals to fit as a second resort. As a last resort would it be possible to tap the cranks to fit modern pedals - has anyone done this before?

Thanks

Jason

If cranks are alloy, go to a good shop and have them tap out the crank pedal threads to English. Make sure it's a good shop with a competent mechanic first, tho, as some mechanics are clueless re: French bikes. You might as well ask them to work on a UFO.

I say shop eBay for some NOS French threaded pedals... They show up all the time, and don't sell for all that much. I recently sold a couple pair of NOS Zeus Criterium pedals in French...

You're not likely to find any clipless or SPD type pedals in French thread, so you'd want to tap the cranks or replace 'em with similar (or upgrade if they're steel) in a standard BSC (9/16"x20) thread. I hate to see good Stronglight 93 cranks (if that's what they are) tapped out though... Find the same cranks in BSC thread if you must go clipless.

I tapped my Stronglight 93 to 9/16" and I don't feel bad about it at all. Now I can use any pedal I want to. Those Lyotard pedals were always too narrow for my big American feet.

I do feel bad about what I paid for those taps that I now have no use for them. That's the price I pay for stubbornly refusing to let any bike shop do any work on my bikes.

Don't feel bad, Dirtdrop. I have done the same thing with tools for bikes and for cars. You may encounter another French-threaded crankset sometime, anyway ... :)
