I am trying to put a flag on my bike so it says on and is not in the way, if I tour without a trailer. Has anyone done this with some succes?

I fly a flag on my touring bike whenever I am touring. You can see most of the setup on this page although the example shows the flag on an unloaded Icebike.
During my Deja Vu tour I took a picture showing the flag on the loaded touring bike. Check out Day Three.
I've found that for touring I like to mount the flag on the right rear side of the bike. This keeps the flapping flag from interfering with my rear mirror vision.
It is possible for the flag to pull off the bike if you go under strong branches especially those with catchy thorns on them. To reduce the chance of this happening I added two zip ties just below the bottom of the flag. There is a string at the bottom of the flag that goes through the zip ties before I tighten them up and snip off the excess plastic.
Riding with a flag is kind of neat. It acts as a great wind indicator when you stop and seems to make you more visible to others. By changing the position of the flag you can influence cars to give you more passing room etc. When flying it on a higher pole then it is possible that it will make you slightly more visible in hillier regions.
The actual flag pole shown in these pictures was around $10.00 CDN at a bike shop.

You might try one of these: http://www.flashback.ca/products/accessories.html
It has a hook so you can hook it back on the rack if you don't want it sticking out.
