I want to put bmx flip flop hubs on a wheelset for a 70's road bike. I'm concerned about the spacing however...

I was told that the frame was probably intended for 5sp freewheel and that the spacing is approx 120mm. -> Would a bmx hub fit that spacing?

Thanx

Rear BMX hubs should be 110mm spacing, meaning you can probably add some spacers to get 120 and not have to replace the axle. Otherwise, a new axle should be around $10 - Sheldon Brown could give you the details, his site is an excellent resource for this type of conversion.
