Decreasing demand might stabilize prices temporarily, but I don't see them going anywhere but up in the long term.
At any rate, the one-day boycott described in a chain letter that has been floating around the interwebs for years ain't gonna do the trick.

Er, if we stick the oil companies with a 4.6 billion dollar loss, won't they just raise prices even further? (Assuming this were even possible, which it is not.)

Dude, gas prices are going up because of GLOBAL demand being right at the limit of global production - about 84m bbl/day. Any small hiccup in supply drives cost up because there is no slack. China is industrializing very fast and beginning to consume a significant share of the world's oil, although nowhere near our 25% consumption. We are the world's pigs on this issue, so yes, it would be nice if we cut back, but don't expect prices to drop. We are consuming for our big cars and houses, the Chinese are consuming in order to industrialize, and lift their people out of poverty.

20 million bpd in crude usage, 1/2 that is gasoline or diesel, so 10 million barrels of fuel which is 420 million gallons multiplied by $2/gallon(just for argument) is 840 million dollars---------way way short of a 4.6 billion dollar revenue loss or interruption.On top of that, they get it all back the next day more than likely.
Numbers dont account for loss in refining, but at those levels a few percent doesnt mean much for arguments sake.

Yes I used to work in a servo here in Aus and the petrol companies are making about 2 cents a litre here and the government is getting about 45-55 cents a litre . Where I am in Brisbane ( Queensland ) the fuel is currently 1.20 a litre and in Sydney ( NSW ) 1000 km away its about 1.30 a litre .

Exactly! It's not like people are going to not drive that day. They just wait to buy gas after the 10th or buy it before the 10th. Now if it was "buy no gas month" or "buy no gas year" we may have a better effect on prices from actually reducing demand. But, if people stoped driving that long I doubt they would go back to driving anyways. :D

This would barely be a ripple. And any loss the big companies took would be a) carried out to the pump prices, and b) discouraging to further exploration.
The best way to deal with this is personal respect for a healthy energy/environmental balance - in short, don't waste energy - and for us as a nation to fund alternative sources of energy and find new ways to harvest existing fossil sources (like shale oil).

I think gas should be more expensive. I still don't understand how I pay more for o.j. which literaly grows on trees than some people pay for gasoline. I say keep hiking up the costs. Let the truckers switch to biodesial for now, which can also grow on trees and lets start working on some clean energy.
Just my rant.

What are you going to do the next day? It does not work like that. You do not purchase gas on the 10th, you will surely have to buy it on the 11th, or 12th. Think about it.
