I was out riding last Sunday when I passed a goose sitting on the side of the road. I did not see it until it took off and flew across in front of me. I must have only just missed it with the front wheel because I was just coming off a good downhill and was doing about 40 kph/25 mph. That goose was not impressed because it flew alongside for about 30 seconds just honking and squwaking before it circled me twice and flew back.

I was wondering if anyone has actually hit one of those before? As big as they are I would rather not hit it going fairly fast. It would have looked funny tied to the Camelback, at any rate.

There's a lot of Canadian Geese in my area. I've never hit one myself, but they do get pretty big. Going that fast, it would take a lot less than something the size of an adult goose to knock me off my wheels.

I'd imagine they don't honk when you hit them though; they probably squeek :)

I have not hit a goose while riding.

However, I have been around when someone hit a goose while golfing. And I almost hit a rabbit last night.

Do either of those count?

If you hit a goose here I think they throw you in jail. They nearly went extinct in the 1950's.http://www.thewildones.org/Jersey/nene.gif

A friend and I were golfing a couple years ago and he hit one. It took off out of a pond right as he was driving. He hit it a little short and as the ball was coming down it drilled the goose right in the back. The goose basicly wiped out and nose dived into the water in a flurry of feathers. It was one of those things where it was absolutely hilarious until we realized it was probably hurt.

Hit a Great Blue Heron once.

Boy those are big, angry birds.
Not to bad with a bit of orange glaze and some fried rice though.

I find the prospect of hitting a goose w/ a golf ball hilarious weather it is injured or not. I conseder them to be a bigger menace than pitbulls. There are swarms of them on our MUT's and they tend to charge anyone who comes within 10' of them in spring (mating season I assume).

Great, honking word play, NzAndy. I haven't hit a goose but a couple of those bad boys have come after me hissing like banshees. A hawk swooped down on my brother who was mountain biking in the middle of nowhere. The bird nearly took his head off.

Yeah, after years of Denver parks going nuts about dogs chasing geese and 'being a menace' the Geese have taken over.
Last i hear the parks people were wanting to encourage dogs to chase the geese so the birdys won't 'be a menace.'

A "friend" was riding with me once and thought it would be hilarious to charge some geese on a bike path. The geese took flight just as I was passing them and one got its head under my arm while another flew across my back. They are incredibly strong birds with really boney wings. They smacked me around pretty good before I could get untangled. My "friend" thought it was hilarious until I shoved her in the lake ;)

One reason I don't ride the local 'bike paths' any more is the Canadian Geese and the lazy F***wits who feed them. The geese are bad enough, but then these lazy bums come by to feed them. The lazy slugs prefer to lean up against their cars while doing the strenuous exercise of tossing breacrumbs. Sure enough, they were getting them to congregate right on the path. In addition to that hazard, the geese would poop on the path. Goose poo is a slippery slug.

And yes, I have hit geese. I have no pity.

My wife was almost hit BY a goat today... no crap. We were riding along a farm, and all of a sudden this goat comes flying out of the weeds along side the road right in front of her. She couldn't have missed it by a couple of inches. If it would have come out a half second later, it would have taken her out broadside.
