General Cycling Discussion - Bike frames (mens vs. womens)

Yes hello, well I got this really cool bike from the goodwill for $9.99 its a Schwinn Collegait and its so cool looking and it rides great but then I found out that there is a difference in mens bike frames and women bike frames and the bike I have is a womens but its so cool, does it really matter anymore what style of bike you ride anymore? Or will I look really stupid being a guy riding a womens bike? I didn't even know there was such a thing as bikes having genders! crazy

Usually mens bikes have the 'wedgie' bar but in recent years this has got lower mainly due to suspension MTBs and now most are uni-sex. I'd have to see the bike to comment but you could always put it on ebay and buy something more to your liking, they seem to hold their value well.

Actually, in this particular case, I think that you have GAINED mega coolness points due to the step-through frame design.

I bought used ladies bike for my wife hoping she would get into riding for health reasons-Fixed it up-New tires, lights etc-Unfortunately this never happened-I now use the bike and never give it a second thought-Most people aren't paying attention to you anyway and they probably could care less

In Quebec Catholic priests used to ride this style of bike because of the long cassock that was their uniform, so this type of bike was called a "father's bike"(velo du pere).

All of my recent bicycle purchases have been "Ladies" or stepthrough frames. My folder is a horizontal tube but very low so I still can step through with ease. Each bike could accomidate me wearing business attire (skirts, pressed pants or light blouses) if need be.

Another benefit that these frame styles offer is as you get older, you get stiffer and climbing on the traditional diamond frame bikes can be a real chore when it is cold!

I ride a women's frame bike (only good one used I could find), I just find that it's easier to mount/dismount, and maybe less prone for theft?

I don't let it bother me.

The good news is, it's less likely to get stolen as boys don't steal girl bikes. ;-)

You have a good transportation cycle so enjoy it. Each month without fail, we have someone posting on how they fear their new bikes will get stolen while shopping. In fact, there's one post right now where the writer fears someone will steal his shifters! You're bike is perfect and you can leave it outside without having to carry the the five pound New York 3000 but a much smaller U-lock. Worry free transportation cycling is what it's all about.

ANY bike, even with an overpriced high tech "man's" touring frame, that is misaligned might wobble at high speed. There is no intrinsic reason why this excellent commuting bike should be prone to wobbling at any useful/credible speed.

Put a good load on it, and you'll get an interesting experience.

Stiff enough for what? The Tour de France?

When men (or women) want a stiff experience they don't need a men's bike to get it.

I said they aren't as stiff, meaning not as stiff as a standard triangle design. Back then they were know for having this problem.
Let me know when you've tried it. I understand it's quite the experience.
