View Full Version : Alcázar de San Juan - Cuenca 176 Kms
Stage 5: Overcast day, so probably cooler. The finish followed a Cat 3 through a beautiful perched village, with the summit just 13 Km from the finish.
Azevedo and Piepoli seemingly tangled and fell on the descent with no apparent injuries of note.
Stage was won by Hushovd, then Perdiguero and Jufre.
Overall changed a bit with McGee still the gold jersey, followed by Bertagnolli +32", and J Rodriguez +41".
Dear Quick.Step:
What the...?

ps... Nice one, Thor.
I see Guiterrez finally climbed off. Tough unit.

I would like to thank Mayo again for disappointing me. There goes my pre-race predictions. I had him in the top 10. Looks like Floyd really had an unlucky break at the base of the Cat 3. He's going to have to fly up the mountain stages to place top 10 in the final GC.
Iban Mayo...annus horribilis.

Interesting how Mayo has basically collapsed since Armstrong vaguely called him out for doping after the '04 Dauphine.
girl27, maybe Boonen left his fastball on the set of this photo shoot (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=134448)?

He did do a storming ride on the Ventoux.

Most shots I saw of him showed him with his right hand on the back of his saddle with body twisted that way. Taking pressure off the broken/cracked rib I guess.
I suppose Tyler set the standard, and people want to try to match him. :p

Sean Kelly set the standard in the 1987 Vuelta riding like a crab on saddle sore sutures that had split open....
(apologies to anyone eating right now...)
I take this win as a welcome confirmation that Thor is in good shape before the world championship starts. And I find it interesting to note that he won a stage where the finish resembles the one they will be racing in the championship, as both have a slight uphill towards the line. The fact that Boonen too was in the group of 25 riders over the last hill, but was far behind when the sprint started, must have been a large confidence booster for Thor.
I read in our local press that chances are 50-50 for Thor to bow out of Vuelta España halfway through, to save some strength for the championship. Might turn out wise, but it will make this a less entertaining race.
Erling.
