yesterday it was 103.4, and now this morning it is 108.4. That's an increase of 5 cents in one day. Is this due to the fact that there is a long weekend this week or is it due to the Hurricane in Louisiana? or maybe both.

What is that, dollars per liter? Can't relate, man. We're paying between 2.50 and 3.00 / gallon down here.
Canadian $/liter is at 1.349cad/ liter here in montreal jump 15 cent/liter this morning= 1.349*3.79 = 5.11cad/gal =4.31USD/Gal

I've heard that $4.00 per gallon is not out of the question.
Stations here in Dallas area have raised gas 20 to 25 cents from
Monday morning to this morning. I've heard we have topped $3.00
per gallon in the area, but I haven't seen that. If so it's 45 cent jump
since Monday morning.
Yes it's due to the Hurricane.

People in Georgia are freakin' out. Rumors of a gas shortage have people flipping out. And the gas stations are more than happy to price gouge the consumer.

Look at the synopsis.

Moreover, deliveries of foreign oil to the USA's largest offshore oil port, the Louisiana Offshore Oil Platform, have been suspended since Saturday, cutting off about 1 million barrels a day of crude.
And Louisiana's Port Fourchon, which normally processes 18% of domestic oil and gas and 13% of U.S. energy imports, suffered extensive storm damage and is now inaccessible due to floodwaters, the Energy Department said.
Energy experts said it could be weeks or months before production is fully restored because a shortage of crude supplies combined with widespread electricity outages also shut down most of the region's refineries and pipelines.
$5 in Atlanta? And the fools keep lining up.
I like your bike in the picture.

So? What's your point. The weather here is great for biking.

Thanks, within a thee mile radius I spotted gas for $4.99, $2.89, $3.19, $3.99 and $3.29 per gallon. Luckily I live near the cheapest gas, for when I need some, but I think I live without driving for a while.

Same here, I filled my van up on Sunday (35 gal tank) at 2.69. The very next day it went to 2.79, and today it's probably 2.89.
The van is parked with a locked gas cap. The bike and BART train can get me everywhere I need to go.
I've cut out future out of town bike centuries, will enjoy the excellent riding around San Fransisco Bay.
This weekend is the SF Grand Prix bike races. I can go on the BART to that.

Same deal here on the other side of the 'daks. I actually drove into work today cause of the rain, $2.81 in the morning, $3.25 coming home. The spread between regular and ultra went for 20 to 50 cents.

I'd call your states Department of Transportation (I think is the right place). Report the $4.99 and $3.99 place as gas gougers.
I've been on about this on another cycling forum, asking what it would take to get people out of their cars. I've seen no decrease in motor vehicles and increase in cyclists on the roads here, so I guess NZ$1.53/litre (US$1.06/litre or US$4.13/gallon) isn't enough. There is supposedly and increase in small car sales though.
This morning I filled up at Krogers for 2.39. When I went to lunch it was 2.99. I figure if I commute to work I can save enough to join the YMCA next to work so I can go to work presentable and have enough extra cash to buy a new bike, new riding cloths, shoes and helmet. Just a thought.
Anyone thinking the same thing?
Here in California gas at the low cost stations went from 2.59 to 2.89 to 2.99 a gallon, the local station is 2.89/2.99/3.09, 3.29 for desiel

Dude, that's exactly how far I have to go to work. Been doing it for three years solid now. It's cake. In fact, I'd relish a slightly longer ride. :)
I decided to top off today at $2.99 before it got worse. In fact, the gas station across the street was at $3.09. 13 gallons later I was $39 lighter in the wallet. A girl in big ass Tahoe next to me rang up $67! Ouch.

Yeah. That's scary close to the truth. Ironic that the first factual thing a Fox network produced was intended as a work of fiction.
Its 3.00 for cheapo gas here...And I have to refuel for 3.15-3.20 for premium,

You think cost is the big problem?
EPA released some restrictions on gas quality not to make it cheaper. But to make sure there's enough.
The reason that stations are running dry was already stated by the gas companies. They are shipping less to the stations to supply critical needs first and rationing the rest by area.
(Side rant) heard one guy on the news saying the cost is 'just unnacceptable.' Idiot. Why dosn't he just go start an oil company that makes cheaper oil, or build a distribution network that's hurricaine proof instead of whinning. If your unhappy with the world CHANGE IT dont whine about what other people should do. Or better yet... fly to the coast of africa, find the butterfly that started the damn hurricane and pin its but into some scrapbook!

The gas companies will never lower the price. Why should they if people keep buying it at high prices? They can make it 6 dollars per litre and as long as people continue to buy, the price will continue to rise.
The gas companies know that people will always buy so they make up an excuse as to why hte price goes up and voila!! A new gas price.

Well I had to ride in that storm at 3:00am. Even with rain gear I was soaked to the bone.
The sad thing is what are fuel oil prices going to be this winter? I'm ready for it. I got 575 gallons of oil in the tanks with a locked in price of $2.69per gallon and 12 full cord of fire wood. I should be good for almost 3 winters.
Yeah. That's scary close to the truth. Ironic that the first factual thing a Fox network produced was intended as a work of fiction.
Well they were factual until they got to part about Russia saving us with oil tankers.
I would like to propose that everyone who works 5 days a week for 8 hours a day should start working 4 days a week for 10 hours each day. That's a 20% reduction in the amount of gas a person would need to go to work for the average full time worker. I think the country could save a lot of gas that way and we'd get 3 day weekends every week! Perhaps if we all wrote to our senators we could convince them to give tax breaks to employers who adopted this schedule.
I know this probably won't happen but I still like to dream about it.

In many states it is against the law to raise the price on you once you're in line.

- filled up the wife unit's car 10 minutes ago (having fueled vehicles is a prudent necessity here during hurricane season, as well as having ready-packed 'go bags' on hand containing cash, valuables, semi-automatic weapons, etc.)...
- paid $2.99 a gallon...
- it will be easy for me to drastically cut fuel consumption as food, banking, etc. is within a 10-minute bike ride (just waiting for a bit cooler weather; anyway, our energy usage at the house goes down three-fold after Oct.)

Hurricane aside, we were supposed to believe that the reason for high gas prices was that demand suddenly shot up all that much.
I have bridge in Brooklyn to sell you...

When demand meets supply price competition goes out the window and the price charged rises to what the market will bear. If we reduce demand or increase supply competition will drive the price down. If we don't then the price could continue to rise.
There are endless impacts of high oil prices. The tax windfall for the government is one. Another is firewood is suddenly going to be a very lucrative business once again. You wouldn't want to be a tree growing in the Northeast right now.

- and don't forget:
if it weren't for federal and state taxes, a gallon of $2.99 gas would be less than $2 (depending on the state you live in; the last time i looked, i believe Wisconsin had the highest state tax per gallon in the nation)
