Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - People that flame others....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi Joe,
I want to say, i love your Bike Forums. It's an awesome site and i think you've done a great job on it! cheers buddy!
The thing i notice that really bugs me (i remember seeing a post of it somewhere) is that there's a lot of people that flame others just cuz they said something wrong (technical stuff). I was on a forum (still am, but not active) called RevScene where people are just nasty to each other when they say something wrong like 'Integra GS-R's were NEVER made in '91 you F@G!!!'. I was wondering if you could give a warning or something to people who do that to others here on the Bikeforums when they flame..maybe leading to a banning of some sort. I'd really hate for BF to turn into a Revscene...:(
I don't know..just my $0.02.
thanks for listening Joe.

I believe there are already pretty strict rules in that regard. Flaming isn't really an issue here at least not compared to the other bike forums I am on.

Actually I won't name the spot but pinkbike is mild compared to the one I was thinking of. I do go there sometime as the site cators to my style of riding for the most part. And hey I am canadian :D

Hmm...I guess what we consider flaming to be two different things. That 'may' be abbrasive at worst but is definately sarcastic. I just assume it is meant to be in fun. Oh wel..

well, he wasn't flaming..but i don't see that sort of response as being needed. i find it kind of rude and pointless. but some of the ones i've seen as of late are guys saying "that's BS!!!"

I cant say what I want to say around here, because I would be kicked out right away. There is so much worthless crap here sometimes.:o People use this place as their primary question station...asking whatever comes to their mind.
Well Klien not everyone knows everything. People obviously feel comfortable in asking questions here. That is good, they should.

I think we need to keep in mind that we can't hear the 'tone of voice' other posters are using.
If I say to someone, "You're an idiot." I might be saying it in a nasty manner or I might be saying it with a smile, meaning that I think you're a funny person with a strange sense of humour.
I try to avoid using language that could be ambiguous but I also try to remember that I might not appreciate the intent of a message the first time I read it.
If a post can be taken in a couple of ways I try to give the poster the benefit of the doubt.
Now, did any of that make sense?

Folks - this is the LEAST flaming and generally nicest group with which I have ever been involved on the INET. (Which is why I stick around.
I am also highly impressed with the intelligence and "subtlety" of most of the participants.
I just don't see where flaming is any kind of problem around here.

I remember when member "Ridealot" (a good guy) told someone, "Thanks for calling me an idiot!"
Then I looked, and right under his picture it read, "Cyclist and villiage idiot."

I couldn't agree with you guy more! BF has some of the friendliest, genuinely nice people on here. Sure, there's the odd heated disagreement or debate, but that just keeps things interesting. Compared to some other boards, this is one of the best IMHO, and I just don't see flaming as ever being a problem here. :)

Good point. Without any body language or other clues, it's easy to misinterpret a posters tone. I've found that, after becoming familiar with a given posters style, it changes (and usually tempers) my response.
(P.S. KleinMp99 is a terminal smart-@ss. ;))
