I have a cannondale frame that uses a cassette rear hub with a 7-speed piece. It is 130mm wide. I was wondering, can I put one of the 9 or 10 speed pieces on it? I'm basically looking to buy a gruppo if possible and upgrade everything to STI...

you will need a new hub, shifters, and (for 9-speed), a new derailleur. Also, you will have to replace the chain.

I know I need the new chain and deraileur and everything else, but why do I need a new hub? The old one will be the same size as the new one. Are the cassettes different?

You don't need a friggin new derailer to run 9 speed.Your locknut to locknut distance may be 130mm as many late 7 speeds were, but the hub body that the cassette goes on is not wide enough for either 8 or 9 speed cassettes. Therefore you need a new hub body or a wheel with the correct hub.
