I'm moving there the last week of sept. trying to hook up with some folks to ride with and show me around the city. I've also heard that the city is pretty vicious toward bikers, is this true?

What part of Houston are you moving to? I'm down here in Pasadena (nextdoor to Houston). There are a few fixed riders, have yet to see one myself. I have yet to make the jump to fixed. Right now all my bikes are SS.

Kingwood has to be one of the best bicycle accepting areas of Houston. My step-brother lives there, and I go up there from time to time. For those that don't know, Kingwood was designed with something like 70 miles of multi use pathways running thru. The trails go along busy streets, and you ride between backyards through the neighborhoods. Most of the trails are shaded by tall pine trees. Just be aware that paths through the neighborhoods are closed at night.

As for a fixed scene, midtown/downtown is where to go. If you plan on living close to downtown, try looking for a place in the Heights, generally cheaper and you are better accepted on a bike.

What ya doing this weekend?

Hey pwarre20, I currently live in Midtown, but will be moving slightly farther out by the time you get here. Hopefully I'll *finally* have my fixie built up by then.

Kingwood is a great place to ride, but don't let Houston's reputation stop you from enjoying the more urban environments. I cycle 60-80 miles every weekend solely inside the loop, and I've yet to encounter an aggressive motorist. Stupid yes; off in their own world yes; but outright aggressive no.

Send me a PM when you get into town and I'd be happy to show you around. As a matter of fact, all us Houston riders should get together for one big BF ride. That would be pretty cool. :D

I'm out in Cypress (NW Houston). The riding out here is pretty nice too. I'd be up for a BF fixed or non-fixed group ride just about anytime.

I'm over by Rice Village near the Medical Center. I'm getting a buddy into riding shape by doing loops around houston and riding by UH via Scott street. We have a mid ride snack/beer stop at Frank's Pizza. I met a courier who works there named Tim. Downtown riding at night is pretty nice. It's empty, and there's not many cars out.

Is Frank's Pizza any good? Comparable to Star Pizza?

As for a Houston area forum ride, where would yall want to meet up? Memorial Park, H.Tinsley Park, The King Biscuit :D , Onion Creek... nevermind me just throwing out suggestions

I like Frank's, it reminds me of Roman Delight in Sharpstown mall back in the 80's. I haven't had Star, though. I need to ride by there some time. BTW, there's a Thai festival this weekend in down town. I'm gonna be there for both days. They're gonna have muay thai and kabri kabrong (sp?) exhibitions.

I usually try and do the local fun rides here on my fixed. I did the Katy Flatlands, where I think I saw a guy with a blue Nishiki with bull horns in the parking lot, post ride. I was at the woodlands midnight ride and talked to a couple people about riding fixed, in addition to checking out the new Raleigh fixed at their tent. I'll be at the Ft. Bend Bike the bend and later that evening at the Moonlight Scramble. Look for a red fuji with bullhorns. So far I've gotten my current riding buddy hooked on cycling, and he wants a fixed-gear real bad. So when he gets the money, that'll be another in our flock.

Since we're here, anyone want to start up some bike polo? I've got a Mod trials bike that may be decent.

Any sighting of other fixes around town? There is/was a used track bike at West U cycles last week. At work (Ut Med school) I've seen a red conversion that has a "this bike is a pipe bomb" sticker on it, and I've heard from Jeff at West U that there's a Bianchi Pista around the Rice Village area.

Yeah, I grew up here, but over the past 6 years lived in Boston and San Diego. While Houston isn't the greatest place in the States, there are definitely a lot worse places to be.

If the housing bubble ever does burst, San Francisco is the first place I'll be getting a condo.

Never played bike polo, but it sounds like a blast. Lemme know some details and I'll try to see what I can do.

There's a guy on an orange fixie (looked like a conversion but can't be sure) that I've seen riding on the sidewalks a couple times in the evening in Midtown.

I've never played bike polo, either. I looked at the rules a couple of weeks ago. I figure anything with a high bb should be good. I second Orikal on the SF condo thing. I was there in July. beautiful. So many cyclists.

But hey, we are where we are. I've been biking everywhere for the past fwe months, and it's good to finally have a riding partner. I feel we can hit any spot inside the loop. We make it fun by snapping pictures of everywhere we stop. I've got some shots of toyota center and minute maid park. After living in Houston since 1980, I actually feel like I'm exploring and becoming part of the city. When I get my Xtracycle, I'd love to get a kayak and start going up and down buffalo bayou.

If we could only get Metro to start getting those bike racks on the buses!!!!

Thai festival sounds good. Thanks for the head up on this noriel. Looks like the festival starts at 11:00am on Saturday. http://www.thaifesthouston.com/ Already have something set up for Sunday, but I can be there Saturday. I'll be easy to spot, riding the SS MTBike with a Lone Star beer headbadge.

As for bike polo, sounds a lot better than bike rugby! Sounds like it would be fun.

I'll be there on Sat as well, probably a little later, maybe 1-ish. I'll be on a celeste (geared) Bianchi. Hopefully I'll see you there.

As for the bike polo thing, let's keep in contact and try to get that going. Fall's coming with cooler weather, which would be a great time to start.

Well for me coming form Pasadena, I gonna drive... to the Heights. I was gonna park at my brothers and ride in. Time - 12 ish okay with everyone?

Location mmm.... which sounds better to yall, the start of the fruit loop at Memorial, or over at Eleanor Tinsley Park at that sundial thing, where the news people set up for the downtown in the background shots?

I guess Eleanor Tinsley would be easiest. That's directly off Allen Pkwy along the bayou, right? 12 is perfect.

Yep that would be the spot. That sundail thing I was talking about is at that parking area just West of that pedistrian bridge going over Allen parkway. Between Gillette street and Sabine. here is the google map, for those still uncertain.

I found out my little brother is playing at Shady's Tavern tomorrow. He is starting around 4, so I might be splitting early. Being the older brother, I gotta show up and keep count of how many strings he breaks or songs he messes up. Besides someone has to buy his beer, and yell out "Play Freebird!" Things I do for the family.

This got organized fast. Don't you guys know that to set up a forum ride it is supposed to takes weeks or months of back and forth emails and postings to get it right. It completely cought me off guard. I all ready have a ride planned for this morning so I won't be there, but if another ride gets planned I'll try to make that one. Have a good ride!

Well I didn't know that. Guess that why we had cloudy skies, and some rain for the ride.
We need to do this again. Also looking toward to the Moonlight Ramble, that is always fun.
Oh Orikal, heres that link http://www.bikehouston.org/content/blogcategory/14/40/

As for the Bike polo... my brother is interested and he is going ask around in the fire dept. We are bound to pull enough people together.

Hey Mike, thanks for the link. I'll definitely be there this year.

My leg got pretty stiff that night and I hobbled around everywhere, but yesterday was all good. Thanks for asking. :) I had a blast and I can't wait for next time...

Keep me posted on the polo stuff. I guess I'm gonna have to build something up. Poor me. ;)

I'll Second that. You can't always choose where you get to live, but the very moment you can, simply leave that state in the rearview mirror, and don't stop until you're out of oklahoma.

At least it wasn't Clinton, OK. But that is based on my visits back in the late 70's.

Checking in here from Kirby and N. Braeswood, where they're doing some drainage construction. Just finalizing some things, making sure we put stuff away, and getting our situation sorted out. Wife's gonna work at the Women's Hospital thurs and friday night, so I think I'll take the car and a couple of bikes and wait it out over there. It's shocking to hear how long it's taking some of these cars to get across houston. I could cover some of their routes in a couple of hours. 33 miles in 6-10 hours?

Take care you guys, hope there'll be something to come back to.

I just moved into my folks house in woodlands yesterday... good timing huh? Right now we're getting the house in order and getting ready to evacuate if neccesary. I'm just glad that all of my stuff is still in boxes. (Except for the bikes that are in transit from Savannah via UPS, I could see that turning into a clusterf@ck of a situation)

Good luck to all.

Nothing like having those little palm plants growing in the yard! I think they are Palmetto plants, but I'm not sure. My Grandfather lives just off of 1488, and spent about a week with them (I was about 5) Spent one day weaving together a cowboy hat with those little plants.

Welcome to the "Greater" *cough, cough* Houston Area.

Where I live in Pasadena is about 4 blocks away from where the storm serge would be at 6ft deep - for a category 5. Left yesterday to beat the parking lot exodus. In Lockhart with my SS commuter, the Surly 1X1, and an ice chest fully of Lone Star light.

talking with my new orleans friend on the phone this morning while he was trying to leave houston: 22 miles in 5 hours. too bad he can't fit his living on a bike or he'd be making better time out of there.

SamHouston
09-23-05, 06:31 AM
It'll likely only flood as bad as Allison if the storm stalls over Houston and stays awhile, which is why Allison was as bad as most hurricanes damage-wise even though it was only a tropical depression. I was living 2 blocks from the 59 underpasses at woodhead etc that flooded right up to the top, made a big ol lake, very impressive. Had to wake the SO up to put all our stuff on tables and chairs in hopwes it'd be above the water, we were on a foundation 6-8 feet above street level so we were lucky like that, only had to spend an hour pushing water back from the door.

Rita will probably dump less rain, the concerns with a catagory 4 are mostly wind related, even if it drops to a catagory 3 before landfall it's going to tear some @#% down. Alicia was bad, in 83, but while it was scary we didn't evacuate...Houston isn't as near the water as New Orleans. I guess the evacuation is to prevent people from having to do without power/water etc in the aftermath and cleanup? It's good to be cautious and all.
