One of my friends does trials (not trails) on his mountain bike. He pulls up the front to a wheelie while sitting on the saddle and keeps pedaling to a comfortable speed. Then stops pedaling and coasts on his back wheel feathering the brake for balance. Remember he is still sitting on the saddle, do you call this a manual? Or if not, what is it?

NO thats not a manual. A manual is a wheelie thats balenced with out pedaling. And how to do it is get speed put your weight on the back tire and lift up your front tire like a foot of the ground, if you lift up to high you'll fall back and hurt yourself.

I don't know if I would call it a manual, it's more like a coasting wheelie.
While brakes are sometimes used in manuals, mostly it is all about using your body to maintain your balance entirely. Sitting down screams wheelie to me. Whether you are coasting or not.
Still a good bit harder than a regular wheelie, but not as tough as a manual. If your friend does it standing up... well, then he is in for a world of learning as it feels way different.

what are you five? or 13?
if he's coasting, I call it a manual, coaster wheelie or Rear Wheel Roll. if you start out pedaling, then stop and coast, I'd call it a pedal wheelie to coaster wheelie/manual/rear wheel roll.
if you pedal the entire time, i'd call it a pedal wheelie.
what if you start out coasting, no brakes on just your rear wheel and while you adjusting your body to keep the front end up, your butt touches the seat for a bit? would you say it's no longer a manual because you are seated?
how would one do a no footed manual? you have to sit down to take your feet off......
it starts to get extremely silly when you have to break it down to such a finite level.
it's like debating weather a jump is a table top or an invert.....

Yeah, but I'm pretty jaded about arguments over what a certain trick is called, especially from snowboarding. Often they'll have multiple names, regional names, the names will change, a contest announcer will incorrectly identify a trick and people get confused for YEARS, sometimes the same trick has a different name if it's done off a booter or out of a pipe...there's no canon.

wow im accually 12 and you dont know what your talking about you cant peddle on a manual, its cheating. If you peddaled on a manual in a compation then it wouldnt count. so pnj dont ever talk down to me.
PS:sorry for the screwed up Grammer (Im an aim-er).

It's a coasting wheelie, not a manual. A manual is lifting your front without pedaling.

i'm not even gonna say anything about that......
i dont think that is a manual becasue he pedaled to start off. in a manual you dont pedal.
i think its more of a wheelie that he held for a little.
