Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Lets get NOLAGEEK back on a bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As yall know Nolageek is okay, but without a bike. As he said "the payroll dept is under 6 feet of water".
I figured we need to coordinate on getting him a bike. If your got some spare parts, post what you can give. If you can contribute some money, list that too. Guess we need to find out what size frame Nolageek needs.
I'll start with the parts list. Bullhorns and front brake.

I may have a seat and seatpost I can contribute. Let me double check.
I think I've got a crankset that's been gathering dust for a year or so. Looks like an old sugino crankset but isn't stamped or anything, nothing fancy, but it'll work. 144bcd.

1" threaded stem and aero brake levers.
I have a brand new fizik poggio saddle- he's more than welcome to have it.

Good to hear. I think the forum wants to help you with a bike.
You'll let us, won't you? For me, I'd like to think I could help someone I know it would benefit.
So tell me what your dream ride would be....really. Seriously...
Honestly? Wow. I would totally name the bike Katrina.
I would love some sort of track bike, since I've never had one. hehehe But a good ol' conversion is fine with me. I ride a 52-54cm frame. My old Bianchi was my 3rd child, behind my cats. I know it sounds completely materialistic.. but I really loved it. More than my porn. lol Just no room in the cars for it and I didn't think it'd be this bad. No one did.
So, Im not picky. But if I were to be, it'd be a good steel lugged frame. Sexy track drops. Fixed (of course). I loved my Bianchi though. But, beggars can't be choosers! hehehe
Thanks for the good wishes.

i sent a few hundred already but will be more than happy to send bike parts to whomever is in need. i was in new orleans exactly a month ago for my grandmother's funeral. the room that i stayed in at my uncles house is completely under water. it's like looking into another world to see that city drowning.

Glad to see he still has some humor in him. Well now we know what size frame. I pm'd him asking if he had the tools/place to build up a bike, and also asked where to ship this stuff to.

i have a pair of track-like, ordinary trap pedals that need a home.
i can post a picture of them tonight.
its very cool to help nolageek, but lets make sure our support doesnt stop at bicycles. The level of suffering is heartbreaking.

yeah. cash should go to the red cross (or your favorite). i think the idea is that we all have enough spare parts between us to make the guy a bike, which is the last thing anybody should be spending money on when so many persons are dying of thirst/hunger/no meds.

I don't have spare parts.
And I made quite a significant donation yesterday to the American Red Cross.
I'm fine with this.....
I have some road drops I could donate. Or slightly scratched steel NJS track drops.
Edit--I missed the bullhorn offer from the OP.
I have a surly hub, but cash may be easier.

Ok, so what money is collect would go toward purchasing a frame unless someone has a frame to spare. If someone pitches in a frame, then money could go toward filling in the gaps of the bike build. I have already donated to red cross, I am just trying to coordinate getting a bike for a fellow one geared bike rider. So PLEASE lets keep this thread to the task at hand... getting a bike for noalgeek.
I've got a 110 mm, +/- 17 degree stem, as well as a seat and seatpost, but it sounds like those are covered. Just lemme know where to send it (them).

i can get surly frames at cost, if that helps. pistas (and concepts) too.
Here's a basic "bike build checklist", maybe someone can host a list on a personal site and fill in the blanks until there are enough parts to build a bike? Be sure to note sizes and diameters, so seatpost diameter matches the frame, etc......

I've always been able to find humor when put in a bad situation. I'm always the guy at the funeral trying to make people smile. It's a natural reflex for me.
Wow. This is really, really humbling. I'm sitting here in the Montgomery library with a lump in my throat now. (I know, I'm a wuss like that.) I almost feel guilty when so many are in much worse condition. If you really wish to do it, I can send my current address to you via pm (don't want to post it publicly.)
And really, I appreciate the offers more that you know. After riding for the last year after selling my car, I can't belive the cost of gass now. I feel bad being driven around by my friends, when I can't pony up gas money (it's 3.50 a gallon in some parts here and rising.)
I won't accept money though. That would be better off donated to the red cross. I can make do bumming from friends until I can get my check. My friend's parents are here and are feeding us (They're from Honduras, best tortillas and beans I've ever had!) and my friend got paid via direct deposit so he has money for a while to lend me. I heard my check will be available for pick up in a week or so in Monroe Louisiana, but I dont know when we'll be able to go get it. I don't want them blowing the rest of their money on gas to get me my check and come back. (7 hours each way?) I think I'm getting one more severance check after that, so I guess I'll pick them both up, just to make it worth the trip.

So true. As I said. Don't send me cash. I'm not suffering like so many others are. I have it relatively cushy. Staying in a friends' sister's old house that is for sale, but they're letting us stay here for a couple months. I am so incredibly grateful. I lucked out. So many of my friends are in hotels right now. One had to write a bad check to get a plane ticket to go to virginia to stay with a friend. Another couldnt find shelter until they got to Illinois and is staying on someone's farm. I have a couple of friends that are staying in the Astrodome, but I haven't been able to text them since their cell phones died yesterday.
It's really heartbreaking. It's going to be months before I see most of my friends or family again. I'm glad Im here with two of them.. they really make it bearable.

So far, I've accounted for everyone except for my grandmother who was staying in a nursing home, my brother who I haven't talked to in about 14 years anyway, and my co-worker Joan who lived in N.O. East which was one of the places that was hit the worst. I'm really worried about Joan. She was the kind of person that said she'd never run from a hurricane - that "god would take me when he's ready." I hope he didn't.

How are steamrollers? Never seen one in person, now that I think about it. Just curious.

They nice, solid, unremarkable. Very relaxed angles and low bottom brackets. I could actually get behind the angles, but I want a tall BB to avoid pedal strike.
I generally like the colors. They're pretty muted and sometimes ugly (the charcoal not so much) but it grows on you and you come to really like the color.

I just got the phone with nolageek. While talking to him I got an idea for how this bike can get built. Since he only has access to basic tools, building a back would be hard. I have to sort one item out, and will get back with everyone either tonight or tomorrow.

What size seatpost? Got a 26.8 and 27.2 SR Laprade. You know the fluted campy knockoff?
edit: I could probably scrounge up some frozen huckleberries for the pie, too.

This thread alone gives hope to the forums that they'll continue in the fashion that I remember from before. It's sad that it takes a disaster to bind people together when you'd think that just life would be a reason to do it much more, but hey.. what do I know?
But this is great. Don't anyone read this with out being affected.
This is probably a dumb question, but...Nola, are you still selling t-shirts. They're too cool.
I have a 14T 3/32 noname cog and a 16T 3/32 Shimano freewheel - also have a set of generic ergo drops, but it sounds like those have been offered a few times over.
If you are interested drop me a PM and I will toss them in the mail.

Well I have a frame and fork. If it would be helpful. You could have what ever parts everyone has sent to me and I would be more than happy to assemble it into a complete bike and then send it down to him.
If you send me a list of what we have gathered so far I can fill in the blanks.
Hope this helps.
