Are Campy Veloce components considered middle of the line quality? Can anyone tell me if they've had good luck with that component set (ie smoothness, reliability, efficiency, etc.). I'm considering buying the Bianchi Veloce so I'd like some comments.
Thanks

Veloce is quite good. In terms of performance, it is similar to Daytona/Centaur, except that the components weigh a bit more and it doesn't come in 10-speed. Veloce is, in my opinion, roughly equal to Shimano 105.

Veloce is a good Gruppo to get STARTED with, but does not have bearings in places where Centaur and other upper level Gruppos have them, bushings are used instead. Performance, ease of use and longevity suffers. If you plan on Racing or doing lotsa miles get Centaur or better, or be prepared to upgrade as things wear out or you become dis-satisfied with them.
Shimano 105 is roughly similar in performance, but I would say, not in quality.

If you want a long-lasting cheap way to run full campy with solid performance you should go
Daytona/Centaur rear derailleur,
Centaur ergo-levers,
Veloce brakes,
Chorus front derailleur,
Chorus bottom bracket (I don't know if it fits Veloce or Centaur cranks-but Chorus cranks are worth the upgrade for the chainrings alone).
I like the Ultegra BB but the cranks are ugly.

If you start with Veloce, just replace as needed. That is the cheapest full-campy setup I can think of.

The Chorus and Record BBs do not fit Centaur and Veloce cranks [and vice-versa]. The Veloce hubs are good, but substantially heavier than Centaur and have more plastic parts [not necessarily a problem, just a difference]. The biggest weakness with Veloce is the shifters, which are not Centaur or Chorus quality, to be sure, but work rather well and are ptobably just as durable -- if not more so -- than 105 [I only have anecdotal info on this, nothing quantitative].

If you do PLAN to upgrade at some point, you're probably better off going with Centaur from the get-go. There IS a Centaur 9-speed, but if you get Veloce and decide to upgrade to Centaur 10-speed, the path can get tricky.

Ive been riding a bianchi veloce with campy veloce for a little while now.

Ive been quite happy with it. I have a 3 yr. old Ribble outfitted in full Ultegra, and personally I think Veloce outperforms it. The only real weakness in veloce is the weight penalty it carries, it is not a 'heavy' group but its heavier than say Ultegra or Campagnolo Centaur etc.

My friend has a Veloce equipped bike and has had it for 3 yrs, he has had no real problems. I dont really think Veloce is comparable to Shimano 105, it is a step above it in terms of quality AND performance. A great group if you plan on riding a lot of miles. Can be raced on too but Id prefer to go up to at least Centaur if serious about racing.

To upgrade to 10 speed youd need to repalce the BB, Crank, right shifter, rear deraileur and Cassette I think. I may do that in the future but only if I want Chorus, Centaur isnt enough of a performance difference to be worth the upgrade in my opinion.

for a review on veloce stuff got to

www.campyonly.com

these guys are real nit pickers and campagnolo purists and they seemed to love Veloce. Their assessment also contradicts what has been said about the Veloce levers on here as well.

Check it out.

My comments on the shifters was simply based on the prrsonal observation that they felt like they had a heavier action than Centaur. Allow me to clarify -- I perefer Centaur/Daytona's feel, but only marginally. Veloce is just fine.

I actually wasnt stating that in a negative way :)

Just saying the reveiwers at that site felt they were the same shifter with a non-hollowed lever.

For what it's worth, I ride a Bianci Veloce, which -- as the name indicates -- is totally Veloce-equipped. I've only got about 400 miles on it, but I'm quite happy with the gruppo so far, and prefer its "heavier" feel to the Shimano 105 components.
