Rode home at 11 PM tonight and it was cold enough for me to see my breath! Luckily I checked the weather before I left, so I had a wind vest and arm warmers with me.
I do have a question though. In the cold weather, is it better for you to push a bigger gear or spin at a high cadence?

Is it better for what? What do you want to know?

Could you re-word the question please.

Sorry. I know in the cold weather that in order to keep your legs from crampping up, you have to keep them warm. What I want to know is if spinning at a high cadence or mashing the big gears will keep your legs from cramping up. Or does it not matter as long as your legs are moving?

Spin a small gear. This will keep circulation up and keep the blood flowing.

Ditto.

Still, the main thing is this: keep your extremeties warm--fingers, toes, ears, etc. As long as you're dressed properly, you'll be warm at whatever pace you are used to.

And DON'T OVERDRESS! You'll overheat. Bring along a change of jackets in case you have a flat or something. Being wet in the cold will give you a chill once you cool down.

Don't crush big gears in cold weather as you run the risk of damaging connective tissue and/or muscle if you try it before you're really warmed up.

Small gears and a high cadence are the way to go--just ask Lance. :)
