Coming up to winter and I'm wondering if I should stick to my hybrid with new studdud tires or would I have more control with a beater mtb that has wider tires. Last year I wiped it alot on my hybrid but I didn't put studded tire on. I had also read that putting a studded tire on the front only is a good idea due to the fact that when you hit dry pavement you still have the traction of the bike.

You could use a tire with more studs on the front wheel, I would not recommend a studless rear tire if there is a lot of snow and ice where you live. I ride alot on fire roads and on lakes and in ski tracks when the conditions allow it and then studs on both front and rear are essential.

I ride a cross bike with Nokian 35mm studded tires. To date I have not had to have a wider tire. If you are going to get studded tires, get Nokians as they have carbide studs, which last quite a long time.
