Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Opinions on On-One Bikes

I'm looking for a cross frame with horizontal dropouts and they have been harder to come by than I expected. On-One, a UK brand, has one for about $400. I have not heard anything about them so looking for opinions or rec's for another manufacturer with what I'm lookin for.

If you are looking at the il pompino, it seems to be quite highly regarded, and is seen as being very good value. next years models will have a 120mm rear end instead of 135. which may or may not be what you want? Any questions ask via their website, they are very helpful. Last time I looked there were a few reviews for the pompino in links on there.

The Surly Cross-check is another one you might look at. Frame goes for around $400, horizontal drops, and braze-ons for fenders, bottles, and canti brakes.

I have 2 of their MTBs...a SS and a geared Inbred. I've beat the crap outta both for 3-4 years and they are still going strong. Brant (the owner) is an awesome guy to deal with. The only thing that might hurt (if you order from the UK is the exchange rate) but lots of people seem to stock them here now. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a SS.

There's also Spot Brand in Canada.

I know a few people riding the Pompino and one guy riding the Inbred and they only have good things to say. Recently reviewed in a british cycling mag and was very highly regarded by the testers. I wish I had one...

The frame has had good reviews. The complete bike had severe chainline issues.

i am a bit late on this one.
i have just put about 400km into my new On-One il Pompino.
i am happy with it. it isn't light but i am very happy with the feel. very well balanced.

my only criticism would be that there are only 4 frame sizes. the frame that i have is potentially 1cm too long in the seat, but right in the top tube, while the size below is a full 3cm smaller in the seat tube which means i'd need about a 160mm stem. i went for the shorter stem but a lot of people would go for more seat pillar and a longer stem - but if you want to go cx i reckon you need a shorter stem if you can manage it. also, because the top tube has a 5 degree slope, it makes the steerer tube look about a 1 to 1.5 cm longer than you'd get on a traditional road frame.

any way, i like the aesthetic. and it feels good to me.

as said below, next year's will have 120mm rear spacing when sold complete. bought as frame only, i believe that the spacing will remain 135. BTW, i am using their double fixed rear hub and i think it is good quality for the money.

also said below, the spot is a worth the look if you have the money. one of the shops over here imports them and they have a cross setup. just so beautiful - it is a standount amongst colnagos, tomassinis and operas, so hats off to the people at spot. but you'll pay. here the spot frame costs about $1800 against the pomino at about $800.

and by the you get to $1800, you have to start asking yourself if it wouldn't be worth getting a local frame builder to build you a custom. custom frames here (in steel) go for between $1200 and $2500 depending on reputation and quality of finish.

Sounds good. Says on Iro's website that they are out of business indefinitely. Hope it isn't too permanent. The On-One frame/fork is pretty good as well. Any other value brands?

I built up an I'l pompino frame with an 8-speed nexus hub. great bike--I rode it around for a couple of weeks before giving it to the guy I was building it for. $400 sounds cheap though--you sure its not in pounds? in J&B, the frame went for over $200 frame-only. that'd be considerably jacked up by any retailer.

i really like my SS cross-check i just finished. flip flop 36-14 fixed, 16 free. CX setup-- shallow drops, cross levers, rad old school onza cantis, paul hubs laced to salsa delgados. awesome commuter, even more fun off-road! maybe ill post a pic..

i built up a ss dj frame vrom on-one, the imp, and it was a really really nice frame, natural finish with all the discoloration form the welds. nothing but good things to say.

Buy the Il Pompino. Nothing beats the feeling of riding a frame named "Blow Job".
