Touring - Wisconsin to DC in September

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm (hopefully) setting off tomorrow on a solo trek from Baraboo, Wisconsin to Washington D.C. My goal is to reach our nation's capital in time for the Sept. 24 peace rally. My itinerary is flexible, but I plan to take the ferry across Lake Michigan and then visit family across southern Michigan before entering Ohio, cutting the corner of Pennsylvania, and then following the Potomac to D.C. If anyone has suggestions of places not to miss along this route, or wants to ride along with me for a day or two, let me know. Also, I'm packing a tent and sleeping bag, but if anyone has a guest room that they want occupied for a night, I'd be willing to endure that hardship!

Are you coming down the Great Allegheny Passage Trail and the C&O canal trail?

and http://bikewashington.org/canal/
Several good places to visit - Pittsburgh, Fort Frederick, Antietam Battlefield, Sheperdstown, Harpers Ferry, Great Falls. Widewater, just south of Great Falls, is one of the prettiest place on the entire C&O.

Yep-the Allegheny and C&O trails are on the top of my list. Nothing better than getting off the road and onto a trail. It's the stretch from Michigan to Pittsburgh which is yet to be determined.

This site might help for the Ohio part. http://www.dot.state.oh.us/bike/
although it seems to be more trail oriented than road.

Maybe you would be interested in visiting the green festival at the Washington D.C. Convention Center on Sept. 24.-25.
Since you are coming with your bike, you get half off admission if you use the free bike valet parking.

I wish you good weather and a lot of fun for your ride. :)
