I am a 65 year old woman whose only extended biking experience was 1990, training for a MS 150 in Liberty, Missouri. The first time I got on a bike then -- my daughter-in-law's -- I immediately fell off! Rode many miles subsequent to that and got my first (and only) century that year. Since then my husband and I moved to Washington state, life got in the way and while I have ridden a bit in the interim this is the first time since then that I have really worked on conditioning. I have done weight training for 4 and a half years and really, really noticed the difference in my legs from when I tried to peddle previously. I am facing my first real trial next week, having been talked by a friend into a four day ordeal of biking and camping. I have done research re panniers, loading, etc. and hope I can cope! I am also looking at buying a new bike soon, which will be more suitable for touring than my road model. (Which I am not taking on the trip, but am instead borrowing a heavier bike from my daughter). I would very much like to hear from other ladies my age who have embarked on touring, or even riding more than 20 miles or so at a pop and get some opinions, if possible, re the most suitable, but not expensive, bike.
