Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - nyc bikes

anyone ride one? what do you folks know about them?

The search is your friend. And that search will let you know that they fall heavily in the negative category.

I ride one of these and have never had a problem with it. Ive had it for about 4 months and put a few hundred miles on it.
I know a lot of people said they have had problems with NYC bikes, so far no problems with them yet.

I did change out a few things on the bike. I added carbon fiber seatpost, tit. selle seat, profile bars, & cinelli stem. It takes a one hell of a beating so its become my everyday rider.

I just started doing Dealer Rep work for Fetish Cycles so my NYC bike may become my backup bike.

I read some of the trash talk here about NYCBikes, and some of the (seemingly) self-written hype about the other guys, but I had already bought some stuff off of ebay from them with no problems. Most of the trash talk came from guys who were pissed they had to wait for repairs in the high season, or that they had to pay an outrageous $5 handling on ebay stuff (when the prices are that low?). Anyway, I bought a cityfixed figuring if I hated the frame - the parts package was worth the price.

I got the bike, and have barely got off it since. It's light and quick, I truly dig the looks of those sun rims (I was upset I got in after they stopped using the Velocity rims as spec, but those swift's are holding up against Chicago streets), and it's unique in my parts (although it probably won't be now that it's in Bicycling Mag). I would encourage anyone who is interested to make the plunge. Good guys like this who try to make good bikes at affordable prices deserve to do well. I wish I could afford the upgrades yellowfixed has, but the stuff works great for me, and mine weighed in at 19lbs!

It's funny how ever so often people come along whose participation in this forum is limited almost exclusively to talking up NYCBikes.

I know personally at least a half dozen people that got wrong order, broken parts or was treated like ***** bythe staff at this shop.
Save your hard earned money and spend wisely.

It also kinda makes you wonder when questions are asked and there's a pile on of the same screen names without specifics to their *****es "I know spomeone" or "you'll hear everybody here say." The problems with nyc bikes that ARE posted tend to sound like my worst customers. I have contributed to other threads on Bike Forum including this one. I work in a bike shop in Chicago that doesn't carry fixed stuff, so I have no allegiances to a brand other than personal experience as a customer. I just have a problem with the echo effect that gives a good company a bad name.

Or should we just call this the Iro forum?

No need to get upset fixwrench. Whats wrong with everyone liking IRO and not NYCBikes? It just seems to be the general consensus that one has better service than the other. Notice that I said service. The two companie's bikes are pretty much the same, nothing wrong with a NYCBike's frame, it's just that some people have gotten really bad service from them and everyone enjoys dealing with tony instead. I personally would and did pick IRO because of the service. Will NYCBikes offer to lend you a set of their own wheels if they don't have the ones you need in stock?

I have not trashed talked NYC bikes yet but will use your little rant as an opportunity to do so. I do not know anyone that has complained about NYC bikes without a valid complaint. I do know a few people who have ordered from them and recieved the wrong color bike or completly wrong set of parts ordered on the bike. I bought my first bike from Will when he was a little hole in the wall shop up the street from where he is now. I used to like them a lot. But their service and attitude has gone downhill. Some people are just Haters i agree with you there, but i do hear some real complaints from people

Makes you wonder that people have a different opinion than you? If you don't like NYCbikes, fine. I got the frame from e-bay for a whole lot less than what I was willing to pay. I don't know about their service and based on what I've read on this forum (at least in the single speed/fixed gear section), sounds like their service is questionable. But since I'm basing my opinion on my experience on the frameset only, I'm happy with it.

the 700c coaster wheel i got from them was a complete p.o.s.

I think most people who are local to them, and who have a certain expectation of an LBS (i.e. not your average "I want to buy a bike for nice rides in the park" customers) are generally unhappy with the service and demeanor at NYCBikes. I bought a bike off of them on ebay, and regretted it upon going to pick up. Why? Because when I mentioned that I was trying to build up my own fixed gear conversion, Will, the owner, said to me, "I advise against it," and then went on to give me a hard sell on spending $700+ on one of their builds. Not the friendly local bike shop banter I enjoy; it felt more like a used car lot. And the thing is, I think that he said this because many customers will heed a patriarchal warning like this and then be scared into forking over a lot of money in order to feel secure. This is the business model, and from what I can see, it's working well. Most people in this area, who aren't really into bikes, still go to the shop for their purchases.

I also don't think most people "like to hate." What most people do like to do is vent when they feel that they've had an unpleasant interaction in a shop. Those people like to make sure that that shop's business is hurt as a result of mistreating its customers, and they also like to feel validated in their frustrations.

Shops also like to maintain a good image, even if they don't like to actually treat customers well. Part of that image maintenance could include logging on to an open discussion forum and posing as a happy and satisfied customer. Or, they could just ask friends to do it for them. Not unheard of behavior, nor is it without precedent. And heck, it's a lot more creative and less labor-intensive than actually addressing a reputation for poor customer service. So is selling lots of stuff through ebay, for that matter.

ill just add that the fixed wheel i bought from them was a peice of ****.. i mean i knew that going into buying a fairly inexpensive wheel but for god sakes they gave me some throw away bolts instead of track bolts also the wheel was untrue.
I went and bought it at their shop so it wasnt that it got roughed up in the mail.
