my skateboarding background makes me think it's one of those things like skating switchstance. no matter how much practice i get, i'll never be able to pop an ollie as high switch as i can regular. just like i'll never be able to hold a trackstand as long in a switched position... but there are the super few that can do both just as well.

the only suggestion i can think of is practice

try working on your balance by veeeeery slowly decelerating to a stop. then, try to hold yourself up as long as you can.

other than that, also try learning the responsiveness of backpedaling. practice pushing backwards on the pedals and see how much force it takes to move/balance your weight.

also as you get better with this, practice rocking back and forth by pressing forward/back on the pedals. eventually you will get better and will rock back/forth less and less until you're doing a motionless trackstand.

I have wicked toe overlap and the only way for me to do it is to take my foot out of the toe clip and either flip the pedal down or put my foot on the tire. I would not recommend the latter; it's only for impressing chicks and scraping your knees.

Honestly, I can only pull "fakie" stands at red lights. I think it's just a heat of the moment thing. When I practice them it never goes well.

"fakie" is just a term that skateboarders, snowboarders, etc. use. it means you're doing it with the other foot forward. if you usually skateboard with your left foot forward, "fakie" is with your right foot forward...

i always thought fakie was when you went backward out of a trick, and that if you skated with your "wrong" foot forward it was called "goofy foot."

Or "switch?!"

I wanted to say something earlier, but I decided to stick with fakie to ward off any more confusion.

so then wouldn't fakie be right foot forwards wheel turned right if you're usually left foot forwards wheel turned left?

fakie is anything backwards, you can go into a trick fakie, and land a trick fakie.
if you are regular foot and do a trick goofy foot it's called switchstance, or switch for short. you are doing the same trick just switching the position of your feet. so if you wanted to apply skateboarding terms to trackstanding, i think switch trackstand would be the most appropriate.

I'd go with "switch." Fakie would essentially be riding backwards. We use "switch" in trials also...when you can do a move with your "bad" foot. With enough practice, you'll be nearly equal.

If you think switch stands are hard, try a switch bunnyhop.

switch manuals are pretty hard as well...and forget about switch rear wheel hops...

switch trackstands are a cinch.

i can't track-stand, but when i practice i find it easier like you describe.

the only thing is that the amount of toe-overlap i've got [about 3cm] makes me think i'm going to bite asphalt at any point soon.

i wonder if it's because i'm goofy footed...?

i had the same idea, but instead of just saying that, i tried to make a thread out of it, which apparently turned out to be the stupidest thread in the universe ever. dern.
