Commuting - Freeways

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Did you ever stop to notice how freeways basically create a "moat" around major cities?
There are only a few places a bicycle can get across a freeway, either under, or over, a freeway overpass. Hmmm...

I've had to stop a number of times because those darn freeways got in the way.

I've noticed that overpasses where I live tend to narrow the lanes and the road in general. If you take the lane you get honked at if you stick to the side then you get people trying to squeeze by you in the narrowed lanes. Is this true elsewhere as well?
Freeways.... What are they?
Our city has a population of ~1 million people, and there is only 1 freeway that delivers you from the country to the city. Surprisingly it all works very well considering the main roads have traffic lights every 1/4 mile.
CHEERS.

Dutchy, that's because you don't live in Merkinland, where it's bloody *unthinkable* to not drive. I have to cross over an overpass on my way to work, and I hate having to sit by the side of the road, waiting for the horde of cars to pass so that I can cross the on-ramp entrance to get back to the real road.
A cyclist/pedestrian bridge (or a fscking decent train system) would make all the difference, but nooooo...it's a "wasteful subsidy".
Too bad there are not more of these bike/pedestrian bridges crossing freeways. This one was in Berkeley, CA near the bay.
