Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Fixed dual suspension

I ahve a buddy that has a inexpensive "Next" bicycle that needs some repair. He has since bought another bike and this ine is just sitting around. Anyways........Its dual suspension and could be had for cheap I believe, would it make sence to convert it or dare I say a waist of time? I havent seen a fixed/ss dual suspension, If theres any out there can I see some pics?? I suppose I could replace the rear shock with a ajustable rod with heim joints on either end.

Opnions/thoughts/pics??????

Wouldn't chain tension be heavily affected (negatively) by the pivoting of the rear triangle?

I think those dept store type FS MTB's have a unified rear triangle. If so it would work. I keep bumping into those old URT MTB's from the 90's online and consider making a conversion but I never will.

a unified rear triangle still wouldn't work, as the fulcrum point is behind the bottom bracket. for a full suspension fixed to work (with out a tensioner, which would be a bad idea in itself) the fulcrum point would have to be at the dead center of the bottom bracket.

Such is the case with all Next bicycles. I wouldn't even garbage-pick that bike, but I would certainly be interested in seeing someone make a full suspension into a fixed-gear. This is the way to do it for cheap.
Is your buddy trying to sell the bike to you?

No just a 10 year old frame gathering dust on thier shelves. Schwinn actually made them first with the introduction of the homegrown but the fad gave way to longer travel machines.

I say make it singlespeed? Seems a lot more practical than a dualie fix. If chain tension/suck was an issue, there's always a springy tensioner.

ahh, I was thinking of a different set up, my bad... I dunno still seems like a real bad idea. trying to skid would probably put alot of feedback on the cranks, leaving you hopping all over the place. single speed would be safest. but remembering which board I'm on, I say go for it!

I was thinking of replacing the shock with 2 heim joints (ball joints) with a fixed rod between them. That way it would act like a hard tail. Throw some cheap ass slicks on it and ride it for what its worth??

Im also trying to get a $$ pot up for either a Langster or Pitsa. Maybe the money is beter spent elsewhere than a K mart bike?

langster or pista? come on now... get something with more quality, at the very least, a KHS flite, those aren't too bad. not a langster or pista though, please

Heres what you do to get rid of all problems. Take out the Rear Shock if you call it that. Than get a seat post that is approx the size of the shock. Drill holes thorugh both sides of the post. Put in position and tighten the bolts that held the shock.

$$ is a issue. Plus I might not like it, though I doubt that will happen but you never know.

Is the beast like this? This could be made fixed without removing the rear shock. It would make a cool frankenbike. The axis on which the rear triangle rotates will certainly not be in the centre of the BB on a cheapo crapbike, but it could be like in Cynikal's link, with a solid chainstay.

Smoking crack is cheaper and safer than converting a FS Next into a fixie. Makes more sense too

Well.......gotta give me a *little* credit Im jonesing for a SS/Fixie. Maybe not one of my brightest ideas to date, but it dosent hurt to ask opnions (constructive criticism is appericaed) before dumping any money into a pit. Thanks for the advice, Im gonna pass and keep my eye out for a older (good) frame or buy something new.
