Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - where do you get your brakes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I am getting my first fixed bike this weekend, it does not have a brake, but it is drilled for front brake. I am not sure if I need the brake or not, but I am worried about "the hill" and campus (those freshman just walk out into the road and do not look even for cars) and having a front brake will make me at less feel safer.
My question is where do you get a single level and brake or do you just get a pair? I do not have any old parts laying around. If someone has an old set laying around PM me, otherwise it is an ebay purchase?
Thanks
Freshmen.
what can i say?

Errr, if you don't know if you need a brake or not.....doesn't that tell you something? btw: making stuff work by parts bind and dumpster diving may or may not be part of the "style". But fear not, soon all Fixee stuff will be available at your local Abercrombie and Fitch.

thank you sir. may i have another?
hey roscoe, i have brake levers that would go better with your guitar bike than the ones you have. they have a little more silver on them. i'll just drop them off at the bar. keep em if you want em.
aluckyfiji, i also have cheapo calipers (somewhere around here. . .) that you can have for the shipping costs, provided you still need them.

Otherwise, if you have a local bike shop where you are, especially one that deals in used bikes or utilitarian cycling, they may have a parts bin that you can pilfer for a cheap brake.

If I were to have brakes I've buy them from the interweb.
Which campus in 'bama? I have an old side pull and lever I'll part with if you're local. Cabling is another issue.

Lol! If that ever happens, I will throw my IRO through the window of the local one.
For stopping, I threw on a spare Shimano 105 with a Salsa cross lever on my bullhorns. It gets the job done. I need to get some kind of quick release setup though in case I see some other tough fixie guy with no brakes...that way I could remove them quickly and hide them in my Starbucks mug or my Gucci messenger bag and keep my street cred.

wow-the singlespeed/fixed forum is just like the road forum why newbies ask if the should get DA or Record... I admit that I am a freshman to the fixed world...hell I will probally ask more stupid questions (but only after I search to see if it has been asked previously)
dumper diving will not happen here, it is a small town in Alabama so there are no bikes, and we only have one bike store (which I hate) and they only sell new specialized... so those suggestions are out but thank you for actually addressing my question

Probally the wrong one, UA-Tuscaloosa, but I am here in graduate school and from Tennessee so I have no ties to UA football if that helps...Could you ship them if I paid for shipping?

I didn't do my undergrad here so I don't have the hate for UA that some do. I'll ship them to you, don't worry about cost. Just PM me an address.
