Bicycle Mechanics - Computer problem

OK so it's hardly 'mechanics', but we don't have an electronics section here do we?! I was just wondering if any owners of (especially Specialized) bike computers had experienced Sudden Death of their unit after changing a battery! Mine is over 8 years old and started displaying odd measurements yesterday morning after my ride into work. I changed the battery at lunch time and it appears to have snuffed it. I put the old battery back in case the new one was duff, but to no avail. Have I forgotten something, like a reset switch or is it curtains for this particular box of tricks?

Is it clean inside - that is, no leakage of the battery or water getting in it?

I guess over a long time it might start to mess up on you. They are cheap enough though to buy a new one.

It's clean as a whistle inside so I suppose it's died. Should I look to replace it with a wireless model? Absolute accuracy isn't an issue, but I do want a reliable one.

Use a cordless? I'd say yes. I use a CatEye cordless and it has never given me any problem, except for one 'spooky' when it somehow lost my wheel circumference and switched to a lower setting. I got home from a road ride, and was amazed to find I'd done quite a few kms more than I thought. I can't explain that.

The cordless ones are neater, imo, and I think the front end looks neater without another cable in the way. I think the cordless must work on an unobstructed 'line of sight' (ie no handlebar bag in the way) and become unreliable if there's more than 45cm (18 inches) between the computer and the transmitter.

Yes. The computer could sense upto about 18" away but it was very erratic. Right next to the sensor though, it works fine. I think the distance between the sensor and handlebar might just be at the extreme distance that CatEye recommend. I'll check all these things at the lbs today.

Sod it! My previous reply is a reply to a different thread I started on a similar issue. I got the threads mixed up. What I cannot do, and noone else in the forum can or must do, is to be so presumptious that we can answer questions directed at someone, when only they can know the answer or explain in furtther detail.:D
