I've been riding track bikes for a few years now, so I decided to give something different a try. The goal was just a bike that would be easy to ride around the city; light weight, no special shoes, fatter tires for comfort and less flats too. I came across this Cannondale and decided I liked it for this project, so here we are:

Hightlights are singlespeed conversion of course (using the Gusset spacer kit because it looks pretty), Performance "Slick City" tires that were on sale for $7 each, flipped the stem and took six inches off the bars, switched out the huge seat it came with, removed as much junk as I could to make it lighter. Not a big deal I guess but I had fun setting it up.

It is super-easy to do this type of conversion. Like jasonyates said, the total purchases include:

1. gusset kit (with cassette cog)
2. Singleator
3. skinnier, slick tires.

The gusset lets you get the cassette down to one gear. The singleator keeps the tension, and the slicks keep you rolling like a pro on pavement. Take off all the other ****e and it's on. Haute.

The picture makes the pedal look small like an Eggbeater for some reason, but it's actually a generic SPD-style pedal with a pretty big platform. That way I can go with or without bike shoes.

Converting the cassette hub was super easy. There is plenty of information around about how to do it so I won't go into it here. I was going to keep the rear brake but I got a little carried away with seeing how much weight I could remove. I like the tires a lot -- they are much more comfortable than 700x23s on rough roads and they handle pretty well too. The logos are painted on so I can't remove them.
