so i'm down at the good dog the other night on 15th and as we're walking theres a girl sitting outside and we sit down and i don't see a waitress so i get a couple beers from the bar but it turns out the girl who was outside but is inside now is the waitress and i've just made a faux pas. anyway she is rude to us and later as she is leaving i noticed she is riding a fix, and a pretty nice one, couldn't tell what kind as it lacked markings, so i says "nice bike" and mean it too. i get no reply and after a few seconds (we are walking in the same direction) i say "or not...." more to myself. then she just snapped at me and said "did you say or not!?!?" and i said "yeah" and that was it

anyway i'm from the burbs, and on my way home from work i saw an old guy riding a pista in the other direction and that was wierd

Riding is philly is like a whole nother dimension. Where I live 2 other people ride fixies and thats just because they goto college here. But ride in the city and I pass one every 10 minutes....it confuses me.

So my point is...you could probably just go for a leisurely ride and find a bunch of people to ride with. Or goto critical mass or something.

I was actually surprised at some of the hills in the city. My friend lives around like 26th and Aspen st or something like that and I found myself in a bit of a struggle to slow down sometimes. I thought it was going to be a piece of cake compared to what Im used to riding on. Areas called "Whitford Hills" and the such, you can just imagine.

what up,
i'm a fishtown dude. i'm down for some rides an shiz. it's funny, like some other peeps were saying, in philly a fix is absolutely no big deal, some people even like frown on them cause they think you are tryin to be cool. but i'll tell you what, i've been in baltimore recording for the last 2 weeks so far, and i can't ride around fells point w/o people coming up and talking to me about the bike or making positive comments as i roll by. it is a little unnerving for me, i just say thanks.

yeah, fixes in philly seem to be considered a hipster thing (mostly by the hipster populace (how confusing is that?)) especially if it's in ANY way nice. a lot of the older fixed riders are riding geared bikes now (i call it opting out)... wierd. as far as i can tell the only respectable fix to ride if you're a commuter is a well maintained beater conversion, but a lot of people seem to think even messengers with nice track bikes are just hipsters anyway.
personally i say to each his own. philly is weird tho, it seems like people look down on you for having anything nice.
side note, i was at ministry of information (a bar) one night, and i came out, unlocked my bike and rode home. when i picked my bike up to carry it inside my front wheel fell off... someone had undone my Q/R! now that's what i call fixed gear hate! or course it could just be some *******s idea of a joke, but i have a suspicion that it's the former.

i live near there, corinthian and parrish to be exact. there are some steep ones up there, and the roads are so poorly maintained that potholes are a bit of a problem as well. there was a huge one at 23rd and brown for a while that almost got me a couple times. it was big enough to swallow a whole front wheel, and about a foot deep! combine the hills, the holes and the lack of working streetlights, and it can be pretty scary out there.

Any weekend rides in Philly? The weeknight rides are tough to make it to.

Mattlikesbikes

I head into the city once every week or so but most of the times I am on my road bike doing my Sunday loop.
I live about 9 miles outside the city and I have yet to pass another person on a fixed gear around here. I have seen one locked outside a bar in Glenside but that was in close proximity to Arcadia University so I am assuming it is a collage kid.
I had to meet my girlfriend downtown a few weeks ago and I must have passed ( I was on foot) at least 3 of those ugly alpha bikes and various other fixed gears it was a little weird how popular they are getting within the city. Out here in the burbs it is just me and a few others who enjoy the pain of a good climb and the feeling you get when you reach the top on a fixed .

I am down for a weekend fixed ride also

When you see someone riding a bike in the city (excluding food delivery) it's surprising if it's NOT fixed. Any group "ride" it would probably end up being a "fixed ride" anyway, just because of numbers.

Someone mentioned night races at logan's circle or eakin's oval.

skelly

When I get home from the studio at 2am I take the bike out to the museum and back, or practice riding backwards at love. It's sad, that's about all the time I have for riding lately.

Wed. nights might be good.

It was locked in front of the comet . I also am pretty much 2 blocks from most bars in glenside well at least plush and KT’s the others are an extra few blocks . Let me know if you want to ride I am up for it most of the time . Obviously this weekend is a wash …I am fighting a cold anyway .
