Lance has spoken of a comeback to piss the french off and possibly win an eighth Tour. What ever became of his quest to break the hour record on the track? They built the bike he did wind tunnel testing what stopped him going through with it?

I dunno....maybe he forgot.
We should start a rumor... "Didn't the French say that Lance was too chicken to attempt the hour record?"

The hour record is often called "The Race of Truth."
Merckx actually broke the record in the late 60's, I believe. When he dismounted after the ride, he said, "I thought I was going to die."

Hadn't heard the quote but it makes sense considering other bits I do know.
Eddy had planned to break not only hte hour but thte 5km, 10km and 20km records all in one ride. He had worked out the schedule. He decided even for him trying for all this was crazy. ... The 5km record meant going out just too fast. He went for the 10,20 and hour. He got them all.
This meant his pace was really too fast for the first 10 and 20 for the best hour he could do. He could have ridden the hour again, just for the hour and almost surely improved on his time. He did not, even for him it hurt too much to do again.
