Commuting - Isn't it all about a lesson learned?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was haunted by a noise that occurred on my commute home today. It was a very metalic ding that happened after a somewhat significant bump that I rolled over. There were lots of people around, the ding could've come from anyone of them... I kept going.

I thought about the noise the entire ride home, hoping a) something on my bike didn't pop off that would, ya know, hurt me in the long run; and b) that whatever made that ding didn't come from me because maybe I lost something.

Well, when I got home I figured it out. In showing off to a fellow commuter today, I had opened my saddle bag to show him the light I was using and uh yeah, forgot to zip the damn thing back up.

It's a small bag and I had a fairly good idea of it's contents, so I think alls I lost was a wrench that can be easily and cheaply replaced.

The story (and my attitude) would've been much different if the say, my far too expensive headlamp or all-in-one tools would've pop'd out as well.

I feel like everyday I learn lessons while on the road. Today's? Always check the saddle bag before you leave and stop when you hear a ding, ya fool. Sheesh! You coulda heard yerself!

LOL! that reminds me of the time I lost my rear fender! It fell off and I didn't stop to investigate the noise or even look behind me. Oh well, hope someone's putting it to good use.

Yep, guilty as well.... didn't zip up the trunk bag properly then all of a sudden my wallet  and my chain breake make their bid for freedom. If it wasn't for the loud metallic clunk of the chain breaker I would have lost the lot as the wallet made no sound.

We live and learn, eh....

Yesterday I had to buy my third tail light in 3 months. I hook them to my messenger bag and keep knocking them off when i take the light rail in to work. the last one i lost i heard fall and ignored it, until i got off the train and swung my bag around to turn the light on for the ride in to work (530 am) and it wasn't there

That's the problem with all-in-one tools. You lose them all-at-once.

I am paranoid about noises on my bike. When I hear something, I immediately start looking for a debris field behind my bike, assuming that bits and peices have fallen off and I am next.
