Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Mr. Quicksilver in "real life" Before My Eyes this evening!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Synchronicity is funny the way it works. After throwing in my two cents throughout the course of the day in the "Quicksilver is An Awful Movie" thread, who other than Kevin Bacon (and Kyra Sedgewick) very slowly stroll past me while I'm waiting for a light to turn green on the corner of 9th and 47th. Because of the thread, i came very close to blurting out "Hey Quicksilver," but then thought, "that's kind of a d!ck thing to say...". Then, while I watched them walk away, I realized I could easily catch up, pretend to wait at the next corner, and do it just to see how he reacted. And then I thought, "Jeez, dude, you really are a giant weirdo. You should just go home." And that is what I did. I guess we'll have to wait until another bikeforums member crosses paths with K.B. and pulls the trigger. For the moment, I'll have to be content with the fact that at least today, i had ZERO degrees of separation.

The End.

I bet he gets heckled by messengers all the time, now that I think about it. That is if he spends any time in New York.

You could have asked him about his stair-descending technique, or that cool off-the-back moving dismount.

I had my own chance to harrass Mr. Bacon this spring. I too declined. Perhaps he's using witchcraft.

i almost hit KB last year around 72nd street. he thought it was funny. i did, too.

apparently, KB rides a fixie in real life, and is really embarrassed by the way that movie was finished. at least i heard that somewhere. . .

I haven't seen Quicksilver. I would, but Hollywood video doesn't stock it. I have seen American Flyers a few times. Anyway, I read an article about a cycling coach who worked with both Kevin Bacon and Kevin Costner as they prepared for their roles. He said Bacon was at least genuinely interested in improving his riding skills and thus, his performance, while Costner could've cared less.

You should have zipped in front of him and then did his off-the-back dismount right in front of him and then like given him a smile or something.
That would have been amazing.

dude, i invented that!

actually, i am quite adept at it if i am using my eggbeaters. i just started doing it recently and i am not sure why.

a note to everyone: do NOT try the off the back dismount with look pedals. k? you are now free to roam about the cabin.

Someone on the forums met this coach a year or two ago, and I want to say it was stickerguy, and I want to say it was at the Apple Cider Century which is rapidly approaching this fall.
Kevin Bacon actually learned to do trackstands and some other crap for the movie, which I really respect. He's probably got more riding skills than most people I see on the street.

I release the cleats before going off the back, though I've never tried it with Look cleats/bindings. I have SPDs now -- I don't think I've ever tried simultaneous release + dismount.

Some lady walking out of Pottery Barn for Kids yelled at me because I did the fancy off the back dismount in her general direction. I guess my zany bicycle antics were too much for her because she told me to 'watch where I was going' and 'control my bike or don't ride it at all'. I was actually doing both of these things so I said 'calm down lady, why don't you buy another ****ing wall sconce or something'. It was the best I could think of at the time

I saw a dude once at school trying to show off and attempted a off the back dismount... too bad for him he was on a road bike... it was funny to watch him try to play it off as a mechanical failure.

My parents saw the Bacon Brothers when they played at the NJ State Fair or whatever they call it at Giants Stadium in Rutherford, NJ. My wife and I declined the invite to join them and instead devoured the deep-fried Twinkies and Oreos at one of the food stands!! My parents never did say how the show was...

i can do the off-the-back dismount on a (now fixed) touring bike. with a rack. and yes, retain my manhood all the while.

I don't think I really know what an off-the-back dismount even looks like...

You can't do this if you have a freewheel?

off-the-back dismount should be the only way to get off a fixed gear

you can, only you'll probably end up sitting on your rear wheel since you can't really jump off with a freewheel.

no way I've done it plenty of times on a freewheeled bike with 700c wheels, its not hard just sort of rise up before launching yourself off
